Roof Rack Rattles

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Rattle may be present at the roof rack cross rails.
DIAGNOSIS:
Open and close the doors while observing roof rack cross rails. If the cross rails are loose and rattles are present, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
AR 04318028 Foam Tape (3/16 in. X 1 in.)
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves installing foam isolators to the roof rack cross rail pivots.
1. Remove the rear end cap screws.
2. Loosen the roof rack rail screws forward of the end cap to allow removal of the end caps.
3. Remove the stanchions and cross rails by sliding them out the rear.
4. Remove the pivot screws and separate the cross bar from the stanchion.
5. Cut small strips of foam tape from the roll the thickness of the pivot tabs. Install a strip of foam on each side of the pivots leaving 2 mm (1/8 inch) clearance to the end of the cross bar as shown in Figure 1.
6. Repeat this process to install the foam strips to all four pivots.
7. Install the cross bars to the stanchions.
8. Install the cross bar and stanchion assemblies.
9. Install the end caps and tighten the rail screws.
