Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

A. Replace Spark Plugs

1. For Wrangler (TJ) vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine: Remove the air inlet tube.

2. Mark the cylinder number of each spark plug cable, then disconnect the spark plug cables from the spark plugs.

NOTE:
To remove spark plug cables, grasp the cable at the boot, turn the boot 1/2 turn and then pull straight back in a steady motion. Never pull directly on the cable or internal cable damage may occur.

3. Clean any debris from the spark plug area with compressed air.

4. Remove and discard all spark plugs.

5. Check the air gap on the new spark plugs with an appropriate gauge tool (Figure 1). If the gap is not correct, adjust gap to 0.035 in (0.89 mm) by gently bending the ground electrode. Never attempt to adjust the gap by moving the center electrode.

6. Install the new spark plugs. Start the new spark plugs by hand and then tighten the spark plugs to 28 ft-lbs (38 N.m).

7. Connect the spark plug cables to the appropriate spark plug as marked in step 2. Be sure to route cables correctly and secure them in the appropriate retainers.

8. For Wrangler (TJ) vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine: Install the air inlet tube.
