Antenna, Radio: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

WARNING: ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AIRBAGS, DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the right front fender inner splash shield.
3. Reach under the right end of the instrument panel to access the antenna coaxial cable connector. Disconnect the primary antenna cable from the secondary cable by pulling the connector apart while twisting the two metal connector halves. Do not pull on the cables.
4. Securely tie a suitable length of cord or twine to the primary antenna cable coaxial connector. This cord will be used to pull or "fish" the cable back into position during installation.
5. Remove the antenna mast from the antenna body. (Refer to AUDIO/ANTENNA MAST - REMOVAL).

Antenna Cap Nut Remove/Install - Typical:

6. Remove the antenna cap nut and the adapter from the antenna body using an antenna nut wrench (Special Tool C-4816) (Fig.7).
7. Loosely reinstall the antenna mast into the antenna body.
8. Grasp the antenna mast with one hand above the fender and reach up into the rear of the right front fender wheelhouse with the other hand. Use the antenna mast to lower the antenna body and cable assembly through the top of the fender far enough to access the antenna body from the wheelhouse.

Antenna Mounting:

9. Disengage the primary antenna cable rubber grommet from the hole in the right cowl side panel.
10. Pull the primary antenna cable out of the passenger compartment through the hole in the right cowl side outer panel far enough to access the cord or twine tied to the coaxial connector.
11. Untie the cord or twine from the primary antenna cable coaxial connector.
12. Remove the loosely installed antenna mast from the antenna body.
13. Remove the antenna body and cable from the vehicle through the right front fender wheelhouse.

INSTALLATION

Antenna Mounting:

1. Loosely install the antenna mast into the antenna body.
2. Position the antenna body and cable in the right front fender wheelhouse.
3. Locate the end of the cord or twine in the rear of the right front fender wheelhouse that remains in place from the antenna removal procedure. Tie the cord or twine securely to the primary antenna cable coaxial connector.
4. From the rear of the right front fender wheelhouse, guide the antenna mast up through the antenna mounting. hole with one hand until you can grasp the antenna mast with the other hand from above the fender.
5. Using the antenna mast as a handle, carefully pull the threaded nipple of the antenna body up and through the antenna mounting hole in the right front fender.
6. Grasp the threaded nipple of the antenna body and cable from above the fender and remove the antenna mast from the antenna body.
7. Loosely install the antenna adapter and cap nut onto the threaded nipple of the antenna body.
8. From under the right end of the instrument panel, carefully pull the loose end of the cord or twine to draw the primary antenna cable into the passenger compartment through the entry hole in the right cowl side outer panel.
9. Untie the cord or twine from the primary antenna cable coaxial connector.
10. Reconnect the primary and secondary antenna cables by aligning the two coaxial cable connector halves and pushing them firmly together.
11. From the rear of the right front fender wheelhouse, access and seat the primary antenna cable rubber grommet in the entry hole in the right cowl side outer panel.
12. Reinstall the right front fender inner splash shield.

Fig.10 Antenna Cap Nut And Adapter Removal/Install - Typical:

13. Tighten the antenna cap nut and adapter onto the antenna body using an antenna nut wrench (Special Tool C-4816). Tighten the antenna cap nut to 6.2 Nm (55 in. lbs.).
14. Install the antenna mast into the antenna body. (Refer to AUDIO/ANTENNA MAST - INSTALLATION).
15. Reconnect the battery negative cable.
