Headlamp: Adjustments
The headlamps can be aligned using the screen method described. A headlamp alignment tool (Special Tool C-4466-A or equivalent) can also be used. Refer to the instructions provided with the tool for the proper alignment procedures.Fig.15 Headlamp Alignment Screen - Typical:
Headlamp Alignment Screen Preparation
1. Position vehicle on a level surface perpendicular to a flat wall 7.62 meters (25 feet) away from the front of the headlamp lens.
2. If necessary; tape a line on the floor 7.62 meters (25 feet) away from and parallel to the wall.
3. Measure from the floor up 1.27 meters (5 feet) and tape a line on the wall at the centerline of the vehicle. Sight along the centerline of the vehicle (from rear of vehicle forward) to verify accuracy of the line placement.
4. Rock the vehicle from side-to-side three times to allow the suspension to stabilize.
5. Jounce the front suspension three times by pushing downward on the front bumper and releasing.
6. Measure the distance from the center of the headlamp lens to the floor. Transfer this measurement to the alignment screen (with tape). Use this line for up/down adjustment reference.
7. Measure the distance from the centerline of the vehicle to the center of each headlamp being aligned. Transfer these measurements to the screen (with tape) on each side of the vehicle centerline. Use these lines for left/right adjustment reference.
Headlamp Alignment Vehicle Preparation
1. Verify headlamp beam select switch and high beam indicator operation.
2. Repair or replace damaged or defective body and suspension components that could hinder proper headlamp alignment.
3. Verify proper tire inflation.
4. Clean the headlamp lenses.
5. Verify that the luggage area is not heavily loaded.
6. The fuel tank should be FULL. Add 2.94 kilograms (6.5 pounds) of weight over the fuel tank for each estimated gallon of missing fuel.
Headlamp Adjustment
Fig.16 Headlamp Alignment Screen Target:
A properly aimed low beam will project the top edge of the beam intensity pattern on the screen from 25 millimeters (1 inch) above to 75 millimeters (3 inches) below the headlamp centerline. The side-to-side left edge of the beam intensity pattern should be from 50 millimeters (2 inches) left to 50 millimeters (2 inches) right of the headlamp centerline.
1. Remove both headlamp bezels.
2. Clean the front of the headlamps.
3. Turn the headlamp switch ON and select the headlamp Low beams.
4. Always cover the front of the headlamp that is not being adjusted.
Fig.17 Headlamp Beam Adjustment Screws:
5. Turn the adjustment screws until the headlamp beam pattern on the screen/wall is similar to the pattern depicted in the alignment screen illustration.
NOTE: When using a headlamp alignment screen, adjust the headlamps so that:
- The left edge of the beam intensity pattern is positioned within 50 millimeters (2 inches) left to 50 millimeters (2 inches) right of the headlamp vertical centerline.
- The top edge of the beam intensity pattern is positioned within 25 millimeters (1 inch) above or 75 millimeters (3 inches) below the headlamp horizontal centerline.
6. Cover the front of headlamp that has been adjusted and adjust the other headlamp as instructed above.
7. Reinstall both headlamp bezels. Tighten the screws securely.
