M/T - NSG370 6 Speed, Vent Restriction Prevention

NUMBER: 21-013-05

GROUP: Transmission

DATE: August 03, 2005

SUBJECT:
NSG370 - Correct Shift Tower Sealer Application To Prevent Restriction Of Vent

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves a discussion on correct application of sealer to the mating surfaces of the transmission housing and shift tower.

MODELS:
2005 - 2006 (KJ) Liberty/Cherokee
2005 - 2006 (TJ) Wrangler

DISCUSSION:

If the vent for NSG370 six speed manual transmission becomes restricted, then pressure may build within the transmission. Sufficient pressure built up within the transmission may lead to early seal failure.

This condition may occur if a repair has been performed to the transmission where the repair involves the removal of the transmission shift tower. If an excessive amount of sealant is applied between the mating surfaces of the transmission housing and the shift tower, then the passage for the transmission vent may become restricted.

Figure 1 (item 2) illustrates a method to determine if there may be a restriction in the transmission vent circuit. Remove the plastic vent cap from the shift tower. Using a paper clip, or equivalent metal probe, insert the probe into the vent port. The probe should pass easily through the vent passage and into the transmission housing if no restriction to the vent is present (Fig. 1).

Figure 2 (item 2) illustrates the correct application of sealant to the transmission housing. Only a small amount of sealant is sufficient to satisfactorily seal the joint. Do not over apply sealant and do not apply sealant in a bead form to the transmission shift tower mating surface. Spread a thin layer (film) of sealant across the entire transmission mating surface with the shift tower. Verify that the vent passage area is free of any sealant prior and after installing the shift tower (Fig. 2).
