Center Console Opens When Locked
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves modifying and biasing the latch forward to engage more of the lock mechanism with the console.
MODELS:
2008 - 2009 (JK) Wrangler
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may experience a condition where their center console can be forced open with light pressure when it is in the locked position. This may be due to minimal engagement of the latch with the console.
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Lock the center console. Check to make sure the console is locked.
2. Apply light hand pressure (2.25 to 4.5 Kg [5 to 10 Lbs]) to the latch while pulling up and rearward on the console cover.
3. Can the locked latch mechanism be overcome and console lid opened?
a. YES >> Perform the Repair Procedure
b. NO >> Further diagnosis is required, this bulletin does not apply.
SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Open the console and remove the latch mechanism.
2. Using a drill motor and 5/16 Inch bit, enlarge the two (2) attachment holes in the latch (Fig. 1). Remove any burrs that may be left by the drilling operation.
3. Locate the 2 alignment pins on the backside of the mechanism (Fig.1). Using a hacksaw, grinder or file, remove the two (2) alignment pins taking care not to damage the "A" surface of the latch. If necessary, remove the two bumpers to prevent damage.
NOTE:
The alignment pins must be fully removed to leave a flush condition.
4. If the bumpers were removed, reinstall the bumpers.
1. Install the latch into the console lid. Bias the latch forward. While applying forward pressure, tighten the fasteners.
2. Using light pressure as described in diagnosis, check latch locking function.
