SUBJECT:
Steering Shimmy
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves the replacement of the steering damper and steering damper bracket.
MODELS:
**2007 - 2009** JK Wrangler
NOTE:
This Bulletin applies to LHD vehicles built before August 1, 2009 (MDH 0801 XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience steering wheel/linkage vibration from rough surfaces.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the condition is present perform the Repair Procedure.
NOTE:
Prior to performing the repair procedure verify that all other suspension components and tires are within specification.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Remove the steering damper. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures available in DealerConnect > TechCONNECT under: Service info > Steering > Linkage > Damper, Steering> Removal > Steering Damper.
2. Remove the steering damper bracket. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures available in DealerConnect > TechCONNECT under: Service info > Steering > Linkage > Damper, Steering > Removal > Steering Damper Bracket.
3. Verify the tie rod assembly is centered at the boot as shown in (Fig 1) number 2.
4. Install p/n 68066693AA (damper bracket) by sliding the open end of the bracket over the flat spot (right side) of the tie rod assembly as shown in (Fig. 2).
NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the tie rod boot seal
5. Measure from end of Tie rod Tube 502.4mm (19-3/4in) and place a locating mark on the Tie rod Tube at number 2 as shown in (Fig. 3).
6. Align left edge of Damper Bracket on locating mark from as shown in (Fig. 4) Bracket Bolt threads should be pointing forward with bolt parallel to the ground.
7. Torque Damper Bracket nut to 50Nm (37ft.lbs), Refer to (Fig. 4) number 3.
8. Install steering damper to axle bracket and steering damper bracket with dust shield of steering damper at the tie rod steering damper bracket (Fig. 4).
a. Install the steering damper bolt in the axle bracket and tighten nut to 68 N.m (50 ft.lbs.) (Fig. 4) number 1.
b. Install the steering damper nut on the tie rod steering damper bracket and tighten nut to 68 N.m (50 ft.lbs.) (Fig. 4) number 5.
NOTE:
Index mark the final location of the damper bracket and all torqued fasteners
9. Once installation has been completed turn the steering wheel to the full right and then left position 3 times. Verify the damper bracket position, if required reposition and re-torque fasteners.
10. Return the vehicle to the customer.
