SUBJECT:
Flash: MIL Illumination P1696 - EEPROM Memory Write Denied / Invalid
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software.
MODELS:
2010 (DS) Ram Truck (1500)
2010 (JK) Wrangler
2010 (KA) Nitro
2010 (KK) Liberty
2010 (ND) Dakota
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to:
- DS/ND vehicles equipped with a 3.7L engine (Sales code EKG) and a 42RLE transmission (Sales code DGV) built before January 16, 2010 (MDH0116XX).
- KA vehicles equipped with a 3.7L or 4.0L engine (Sales code EKG or EGS) and a 42RLE or NAG1 automatic transmission (Sales code DGV or DGJ) built before January 15, 2010 (MDH0115XX).
- KK vehicles equipped with a 3.7L engine (Sales code EKG) and a 42RLE transmission (Sales code DGV) built before January 15, 2010 (MDH0115XX).
- JK vehicles equipped with a 3.8L engine (Sales code EGT) and a 42RLE automatic or 6 speed manual transmission (Sales code DGV or DEH) built before January 14, 2010 (MDH0114XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience a MIL illumination. Upon further investigation the Technician may find that P1696 - EEPROM Memory Write Denied / Invalid has been set.
This is caused by the PCM not being able to complete some EEPROM writes under certain conditions due to a random or singular synchronous electrical event interfering with the EEPROM writes.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using a Scan Tool (wiTECH(TM)) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in TechCONNECT, verify all engine systems are functioning as designed. If DTC's are present other then the one listed above record them on the repair order and repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.
If the above condition is present, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
NOTE:
If this flash process is interrupted/aborted, the flash should be restarted.
1. Reprogram the PCM with the latest software. Follow the detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT/TechCONNECT, Refer To Group 8 - Electrical > Electronic Control Modules - Service Information > Module - Powertrain Control> Standard Procedures > PCM/ECM Programming - Gas. After PCM reprogramming, the following must be performed:
a. Clear any DTC's that may have been set in other modules due to reprogramming. The wiTECH application will automatically present all DTCs after the flash and allow the tech to clear them.
2. Type the necessary information on the "Authorized Modification Label and attach it near the VECI label.
