Brakes - Front Brake Noises/Vibration On Low Speed Apply

SUBJECT:
Clicking, Ticking, Grinding, Rubbing Sound and/or Vibration From Front Brakes

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting front hub run out and if necessary replacing the steering knuckle(s), rotors or resurfacing the rotors.

MODELS:

2010 (MK) Compass/Patriot

2010 (PM) Caliber

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built before April 20, 2010 (MDH0421XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Customer may experience front brake cyclic clicking, ticking, grinding, rubbing sound during low speed (<15 mph) light brake apply (noise is not present on hard braking), or vibration through steering wheel, seat, body, pedal while braking.

DIAGNOSIS:

If customer experiences a cyclic/repetitive clicking, ticking, creaking, grinding, thumping, or rubbing sound coming from the front of the vehicle during light braking typically at low speeds (<15 mph), proceed to Repair Procedure A. If customer experiences roughness/vibration during braking, felt through steering wheel, seat, brake pedal, or vehicle body, proceed to Repair Procedure B.

SPECIAL TOOLS / EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE A:

1. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist. Refer to the detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info> 04 Vehicle Quick Reference> Hoisting> Standard Procedure> HOISTING.

2. Measure front hub runout, both left & right hubs. See DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info>05 Brakes> Brakes, Base>Hydraulic/Mechanical>Rotor, Brake>Diagnosis & Testing>BRAKE ROTOR>ROTOR RUNOUT following steps 9 through 11.

3. Replace the right and/or left front steering knuckle with hub runout exceeding .040 mm. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info>02 Front Suspension>Front>KNUCKLE, Steering>REMOVAL, and then INSTALLATION.

NOTE:
Be careful to not damage ABS sensor x-mas tree clip when removing from knuckle.

4. Reinstall front rotors. See DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info>05 Brakes>Brakes, Base>Hydraulic/Mechanical>Rotor, Brake>Installation>Front Brake Rotor.

5. Perform alignment, see DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info>02 - Front Suspension>Wheel Alignment>Standard Procedure>WHEEL ALIGNMENT.

6. Road test vehicle to verify sound issue is resolved, alignment is satisfactory, and that there is no roughness/vibration during braking. Was roughness/vibration evident?

a. Yes>>>Proceed Step # 7.

b. No>>>Proceed to Step # 8.

7. Is there a PSE Approved On-Car Brake Lathe (Hunter or Pro-Cut) available?

a. Yes>>> Resurface both front rotors using a PSE approved on-Car brake lathe.

b. No>>> Replace both front rotors. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info>05 Brakes> Brakes, Base>Hydraulic/Mechanical>Rotor, Brake>Removal>FRONT BRAKE ROTOR, then Installation>FRONT BRAKE ROTOR.

NOTE:
Follow all resurfacing directions and procedures associated with the equipment used.

8. Return the vehicle to customer.

REPAIR PROCEDURE B:

1. Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist. Refer to the detailed service procedures available in DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info> 04 Vehicle Quick Reference> Hoisting> Standard Procedure> HOISTING.

2. Measure front hub runout, both left & right hubs. See DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service lnfo>05 Brakes> Brakes, Base>Hydraulic/Mechanical>Rotor, Brake>Diagnosis & Testing>BRAKE ROTOR>ROTOR RUNOUT following steps 9 through 11.

3. Replace the right and/or left front steering knuckle with hub runout exceeding .040 mm. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info>02 Front Suspension>Front>KNUCKLE, Steering>REMOVAL, and then INSTALLATION.

NOTE:
Be careful to not damage ABS sensor x-mas tree clip when removing from knuckle.

4. Is there a PSE Approved On-Car Brake Lathe (Hunter or Pro-Cut) available?

a. Yes>>> Reinstall front rotors. See DeaIerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service lnfo>05 Brakes>Brakes, Base>Hydraulic/Mechanical>Rotor, Brake>lnstallation>Front Brake Rotor. Resurface both front rotors using a PSE approved on-Car brake lathe.

b. No>>> Replace both front rotors. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info>05 Brakes> Brakes, Base>Hydraulic/Mechanical>Rotor, Brake>Removal>FRONT BRAKE ROTOR, then Installation>FRONT BRAKE ROTOR.

5. If one and/or both knuckles have been replaced perform alignment, see DealerCONNECT>Tech CONNECT>Service Info>02 - Front Suspension>Wheel Alignment>Standard Procedure>WHEEL ALIGNMENT.

6. Road test vehicle to verify roughness/vibration issue is resolved.

7. Return the vehicle to customer.

POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.

NOTE:
All expenses related to this repair, including rotor replace/resurface, should be charged to warranty under the 3136 Knuckle LOP 020530.
