Service Procedure
1. With the front wheels in the straight-ahead position, lift the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.2. Remove the steering damper mounting bolt at the axle (Figure 1).
3. Remove the steering damper mounting nut at the steering linkage (Figure 1).
4. Remove and discard the original steering damper.
5. Remove the steering damper mounting bracket pinch bolt (Figure 1).
6. Using two adjustable wrenches, spread the steering damper mounting bracket (Figure 2).
7. Remove and discard the original steering damper mounting bracket.
8. Measure from the end of the tie rod tube 16.5 inches (420 mm) and place a locating mark on the tie rod tube, as shown in Figure 3.
9. Install the new steering damper mounting bracket, with the bracket stud pointing rearward, at the left tie rod and then slide the new bracket along the tie rod tube (Figure 4).
10. Install the steering damper mounting bracket pinch bolt and nut, but do not tighten the nut at this time.
11. Place the steering damper into position on the mounting brackets (Figure 5).
CAUTION:
Make sure that the new steering damper is oriented as shown in Figure 5.
12. Install the steering damper mounting fasteners, but do not tighten any of the fasteners at this time (Figure 5).
13. Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position.
14. Center both tie rod ends by twisting the tie rod tube back and forth and stopping halfway between the two stops (Figure 6).
CAUTION:
Do not loosen the tie rod tube adjusting sleeve clamp when centering the tie rods.
15. Align the right side of the steering damper bracket to the mark made in Step 8 (Figure 7).
16. Partially tighten the new steering damper mounting bracket pinch bolt nut (Figure 7).
17. Adjust the steering damper bracket so that the pinch bolt is parallel to the ground and the steering damper mounting stud is angled downward (Figure 7).
18. Tighten the pinch bolt nut to 37 ft. lbs. (50 N.m) (Figure 8).
19. Tighten the steering damper mounting stud nut to 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m) (Figure 8).
20. Tighten the steering damper axle bolt to 50 ft. lbs. (68 N.m) (Figure 8).
21. Lower the vehicle from the hoist.
