Steering: Testing and Inspection
Fig. 1 Power Steering System Pressure Inspection:
1. Connect power steering analyzer, Fig. 1 with pressure gauge side to power steering pump outlet and valve side to steering gear inlet pressure port.
2. Open power steering analyzer to full open.
3. Start engine.
4. With engine at idle, turn steering wheel full left and full right several times to warm steering fluid to 131°F.
5. Increase engine speed to 1,000-1,500 RPM, then check pressure gauge reading.
6. Pressure should read 941-969 psi.
7. Close power steering analyzer valve.
8. Do not close valve for more than 15 seconds. Fluid temperature will increase rapidly and may damage the pump.
9. With engine speed at 1,000-1,500 RPM, check pressure gauge reading. Pressure should read 941-969 psi.
10. Open power steering analyzer valve to full open.
11. With engine speed at 1,000-1,500 RPM, turn steering wheel full left and full right. Check pressure gauge reading at each extreme of steering wheel movement.
12. Pressure should read 941-969 psi.
13. Remove power steering analyzer and bleed system.
