Fuel System - Fuel Pump Relays and Emissions Failures
SOURCE: KIA Technician Times Volume 7 Issue 6, 2004TITLE: Fuel Pump Relays and Emissions Failures
APPLIES TO: 95 - 02 Sportage
SERVICE TIP:
The fuel pump relay on 95 through 02 model year Sportage not only operates the fuel pump but also supplies power to the oxygen sensor heater circuits. This is a very common looking relay that comes in many configurations in the aftermarket. TechLine has had several calls on oxygen sensor heater problems that were caused by these aftermarket relays. An incorrect relay will power the fuel pump but not the oxygen sensor heaters. Vehicles built after 97 will set a P0135 or P0141 code for oxygen sensor heater circuit fault (after two drive cycles) but vehicles built before 97 will not set a code. They will however fail some states emission testing because the OBDII oxygen sensor monitors will not set. We recommend always using Kia factory parts when replacing these relays. The part number for main and fuel pump relay is 39160 3X100.
