Engine: Service and Repair
NOTE: On models equipped with airbag system, refer to Technician Safety Information for system disarming and arming procedures.1. Release fuel system pressure as outlined in Technician Safety Information.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Drain engine cooling and transmission oil.
4. Remove windshield washer hose from hood, then the hood.
5. Remove fresh air duct assembly, Fig. 3.
6. On models with automatic transmission, remove accelerator and transmission control cables.
7. Disconnect accelerator cable by pulling back on throttle shaft, then rotate cable until it aligns with slot in pulley.
8. Disconnect MAF sensor electrical connector.
9. Remove upper radiator hose.
10. Remove cooling fan shroud and thermo fan.
11. Loosen generator mounting bolts A and B.
12. Remove generator drive belt.
13. Remove fan pulley.
14. Disconnect alternator electrical connectors,
15. Remove heater hoses.
16. Disconnect engine ground cable at intake manifold.

17. Remove brake booster from dynamic chamber, Fig. 4.
18. Remove fuel line at regulator and return line at dynamic chamber, Fig. 4.
19. Remove cruise control actuator vacuum hose from dynamic chamber.
20. Remove vacuum line from bottom of EGR, then purge solenoid valve vacuum hose at dynamic chamber.
21. Remove vacuum hoses at top of charcoal canister, then canister.
22. Remove lower radiator hose.
23. On models with automatic transmission, remove ATF cooler lines.
24. Remove radiator.
25. Raise and suitably support vehicle, then remove splash shield.
26. Remove A./C drive belt by loosening idler pulley.
27. Remove A/C idler pulley bracket.
28. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and compressor. Position compressor away from engine.
29. Remove power steering belt.
30. Remove intake manifold support brackets (3).
31. Remove starter.
32. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold flange.
33. Remove front exhaust pipe bracket bolts.
34. On models with manual transmission, remove exhaust bracket to clutch housing bracket bolts. Remove clutch housing to engine mounting bolts, Fig. 5.
35. On models with automatic transmission, remove exhaust bracket to converter housing mounting bolts. Remove converter housing to engine mounting bolts, Fig. 5.
36. Lower vehicle.
37. On models with automatic transmission, remove six drive plate to torque converter bolts.
38. Suitably support transmission.
39. Install engine hoist to engine.
40. Remove three lefthand side engine mount bolts.
41. Remove three righthand side engine mount bolts.
42. Lift engine up, then move forward slightly, then disconnect three electrical connectors, camshaft position sensor, ignition coils, and condenser, at rear of cylinder head.
43. Slowly remove engine from vehicle. Disconnect any electrical connectors, hoses, or other mechanical items still attached that might prevent engine from being removed.
44. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten all bolts and nuts to specification.
b. Install engine mount rubber with new washer, then install bolt while aligning engine location and tighten to specifications.
