Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators: Description and Operation
Instrument Cluster AssemblyThe instrument cluster assembly houses driver-operated switches and controls. An analog electric speedometer, stepper motor-driven odometer, trip meter, analog fuel gauge, temperature gauge, and information/warning center are located in the cluster. Center information/warnings include:
a. Engine oil pressure warning
b. ABS warning
c. Check engine warning
d. Rear window defroster indicator
e. Brake warning
f. Charge warning
g. Seat belt warning
h. High beam indicator
i. Door open warning
j. Parking brake indicator
k. Four-wheel drive indicator
l. Accessory (ACC) indicator
m. Low fuel warning
n. Hazard warning
o. Turn signal indicators
Instrument cluster electrical connectors are located at the rear of the assembly. When the assembly is removed, instrument panel electrical harness connectors are disconnected. A printed circuit is mounted on the back of the instrument cluster. It transfers electrical power to the cluster. Bulb holders are removed at the rear of the instrument cluster. Instruments are removed from the cluster after the cluster has been removed and the bezel/lens has been removed from the cluster case. Instrument cluster trim electrical connectors are located at the rear of trim switches and are disconnected when the cluster trim is removed. When the ignition is in the ON position, instrument and switch lights are checked. If any light is inoperative, a replacement of the failed bulb should be made.
Dash / Instrument Panel:
Center Panel
The center panel is a housing for the ventilation control panel and radio, and serves as a base for the cigarette lighter and ashtray. The center panel may stay in position when the instrument panel is removed.
Instrument Panel
The instrument panel houses the instrument cluster, center panel and a number of special switches and controls. The instrument panel electrical system is discussed in the wiring diagrams. Ducts installed in the instrument panel are discussed in Heating and Air Conditioning.
