Transfer Case: Description and Operation
GENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe transfer case receives output from the transmission and provides high range 2WD output to the rear driveshaft and high and low range output for 4WD operation. A neutral position, for manual transmission equipped vehicle only, allows the vehicle to be towed without damage to the engine or transmission. The transfer case consists of an input gear assembly, countershaft assembly, rear output shaft and front output shaft for 4WD operation. These assemblies are contained in a three-piece aluminum housing consisting of a front cover which attaches to the transmission, the transfer case and the chain cover. The front output shaft for 4WD operation is connected to the drive sprocket by a heavy-duty drive chain. Range selection is accomplished with a four Manual Transmission (M/T)/three Automatic Transmission (A/T) position transfer lever which moves rods and forks to select the appropriate gears.
