Lighting and Horns: Description and Operation
EXTERIOR LIGHTSThe exterior lights consist of six lighting Systems: headlights, turn-signal lights, position lights, hazard lights, brake lights, and license plate lights (rear only). The six systems include the left and right headlight assemblies, left and right front combination light assemblies, left and right rear combination light assemblies, a rear high-mounted brake light assembly, and two license plate light assemblies (for the rear license only). All lights are powered by the 12-volt electrical system and are controlled/operated by the driver.
Combination Light Assemblies
FRONT
The front combination light assembly contains two bulbs. One bulb functions as the hazard/turn signal light, and the other as the position/parking light. Both bulbs can be reached from within the engine compartment.
The hazard and turn signal bulb filament is controlled by the combination switch on the steering column. Refer to Steering System, for removal and installation information. Refer to the wiring diagrams for service information on the combination switch.
REAR
The rear combination light assembly is aerodynamically shaped to follow the body contours. The lens is three- colored: amber (hazard/turn signal), translucent (backup) and red (tail/brake). The rear combination light assembly contains three bulbs. Two bulbs are single- filament and are used in the hazard/turn signal and backup light circuits. The third bulb is a dual filament bulb; one filament functions as the brake light and the other as the tail light. A plastic bulb holder mounts the three lamps and associated wiring. The bulb holder can be removed from inside the vehicle for bulb replacement.
The brake light bulb is turned on and off by a brake light switch mounted near the brake pedal and actuated by movement of the brake pedal. Refer to Brake System, for adjustment of the brake (stop) light switch.
The backup light is turned on/off by a switch mounted on the transmission. When the transmission is shifted into reverse gear, the switch is closed to turn on the backup lights.
The hazard and turn signal bulb is controlled by the combination switch installed on the steering column. Refer Steering System for removal/installation information. Refer to the wiring diagrams for service information on the combination switch.
The flasher unit is located in the relay box under the left side of the instrument panel.
Headlight Assemblies
Each headlight assembly is aerodynamically shaped to match the contours of the body. The light assembly is attached to the body by four bolts.
The lens is permanently attached to the plastic reflector. The bulb is of the dual-filament halogen type. The dual filaments are energized separately to provide high and low beams. An O-ring seals the bulb installation to prevent foreign matter from entering the headlight assembly. The bulb can be removed/installed from the engine compartment without removing the light assembly. Each headlight can be adjusted to move the beam up, down, left or right. Two adjustment screws for each headlight assembly are reached through holes in the body structure, directly above the headlight assembly. The inboard screw adjusts the left/right headlight beam, and the outboard screw adjusts the headlight beam up/down.
High-Mounted Brake Light Assembly (4 DOOR)
The high-mounted brake light assembly is mounted near the top of the inside rear door The lens is red and is visible through the rear window. The assembly has one bulb. Two screws attach a cover. The cover is removed for access to the bulb. The light is turned on/off by a brake light switch mounted near the brake pedal and actuated by movement of the brake pedal. Refer to Brake System for adjustment of the brake (stop) light switch.
High-Mounted Brake Light Assembly (2 DOOR)
The high-mounted brake light assembly is mounted above the top of the outside back door. The lens is red. The assembly has one bulb. Two screws attach a lens. The lens is removed for access to the bulb. The light is turned on/off by a brake light switch mounted near the brake pedal and actuated by movement of the brake pedal.
License Plate Light Assembly
Two license plate light assemblies are installed in the rear bumper above the license plate mount. Each light assembly has one bulb. Both bulbs are turned on when the headlights and position lights (parking lights) are on. Each bulb is protected by a translucent plastic lens attached with two screws. The bulb can be removed/installed by removing the two screws and the plastic lens.
INTERIOR LIGHTS
The interior lights provides light for the entering and exiting of the passenger compartment (doors open). It can also be used to provide light when the doors are closed. It is positioned at the center of the headliner; It is both serviceable and replaceable.
