Engine - Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair

Removal
1. Drain the cooling water to the bottom level of the gauge unit.
2. After disconnecting the battery ground cable, disconnect engine harness.

3. Remove the water temperature gauge unit and sensor.

Inspection
1. Water temperature gauge unit

1) Heat up the water temperature gauge by immersing it in hot water.
2) Check if the resistance is within the specified range.
Specified value:
60 °C (140 °F) /125 ohms
85 °C (185 °F) /8.4 ±5.8 ohms
110 °C (230 °F) /24 +2.2 -1.9 ohms
125 °C (257 °F) /15.2 ohms
2. Water temperature sensor
1) Immerse the sensor in hot water.
2) Check if the resistance is within the specified range.
Specified value:
20 °C (68 °F) /2.45 ±0.14 k ohms
80 °C (176 °F) /0.322 k ohms

Installation
1. Smear the sealant on thread and then tighten it to the specified torque.
Water temperature sensor:
Recommended sealant: Loctite 962T or equivalent
Tightening torque: 20 - 40 Nm
2. Connect the harness to water temperature gauge unit and cable.
3. Connect the battery ground cable.
4. Refill the coolant.
