Body - Sunroof Binding

SOURCE: KIA Technician Times Volume 6 Issue 3, 2003

TITLE: Sunroof Binding

APPLIES TO: Sorento

SERVICE TIP:

When diagnosing the sunroof on Sorento models for binding or making abnormal noise when closing, check that the drip rail links are still connected to the glass guides. Several complete sunroof assemblies have been replaced due to the hole in the glass guide being worn and/or the nub on the drip rail link being worn off. To check the links, tilt the sunroof up and look on each side where the link comes through the glass guide. (see photo 1)

If links are in place, proceed with normal diagnosis. If links are not in place, use the following procedure to repair the links.

1. With the sunroof tilted up, remove the three screws on each side securing the sunroof glass to the glass guides and remove glass. (see photo 2)

2. Reinsert the drip rail link into the glass guide.

3. Make sure the drip rail link is not bent which will cause more tension on the glass guide. Bend as needed to renew the 90 degree angle on each end. (see photo 3)

4. Install a speed nut (P/N: K99578 3000) onto the glass guide end of the drip rail link. (see photo 4)

5. Reinstall glass, leaving screws slightly loose. Close glass and adjust glass height so the corners are flush with the vehicle roof (see Technician Times Vol 5, Issue 6, page 4 for more on sunroof adjustment).
Retighten screws when satisfied with adjustment.

6. Check sunroof operation.
