SUBJECT:
SERVICE CAMPAIGN: 2005 SORENTO LX WHEEL GUARD REPLACEMENT
* NOTICE
The information in this Technical Service Bulletin supersedes the information in Technical Service Bulletin Fuel 008, issued in May 2005, which is no longer valid.
This bulletin provides information relating to the wheel guard replacement to prevent dirt, ice and snow from accumulating on the evaporative system air filter.
Some 2005MY Sorento LX models with production dates between 5/21/04 - 1/3/05, may experience a problem with the MIL turning on and the ECM storing DTC P2422 (Canister Close Valve Clogging) due to a clogged evaporative air filter. Kia has issued new parts to eliminate this problem on LX models; EX models already have a full size wheel guard installed.
On the LX models both rear wheel partial guards MUST be replaced with full size wheel guards and a new evaporative air filter MUST be installed.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE:
1. Open hood and check for SC043 Campaign Completion Label in the inner fender above the underhood fuse box.
^ If the Campaign Completion Label exists,
NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED.
^ If the Campaign Completion Label does not exist, continue onto the REMOVAL PROCEDURE.
2. Inspect for a full wheel guard installed in the right rear wheel opening, the evaporative filter should not be visible.
^ If a full wheel guard is present AND the vehicle falls between the production dates 5/21/04 to 1/3/05 then attach SC043 Campaign Label on the inner fender above the underhood fuse box.
^ If the short wheel guard is installed it needs to be replaced, continue onto the REMOVAL PROCEDURE.
Note:
Campaign completion must be verified on the Warranty Coverage Validation Inquiry screen, prior to performing repairs (Kia Standard System [KSS] Main Menu - Option 3).
REMOVAL PROCEDURE:
1. Start in the right rear wheel housing. Remove three (3) screws at the rear lower portion of the wheel guard.
Note:
In the bottom corner, there is not enough space for a standard or stubby screwdriver. Use a 90° screwdriver to remove this screw.
2. Remove all the plastic fasteners from the partial wheel guard. Keep these plastic fasteners, they will be used in the full size wheel guard mounting.
3. When all screws and fasteners have been removed, slide the old short wheel guard out of the wheel well.
4. Remove two (2) screws from the evaporative air filter assembly. Remove the hose clamp and inlet hose from the filter assembly.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE:
1. Install the new evaporative air filter to the filler neck. Install two (2) retaining screws on the housing then install the hose and clamp.
2. Slide the new wheel guard into position.
Note:
It is easier to start positioning the wheel guard by turning it over the top of the wheel and then rotating it towards the rear of the vehicle.
3. Install nine (9) plastic fasteners on the wheel guard assembly.
4. Install three (3) steel screws.
5. Repeat the removal and installation procedure as described in this TSB for the left rear wheel guard less evaporative air filter.
Note:
Evaporative air filter is only located in right rear wheel well for 2005MY and later.
6. Open the hood, remove the 10 amp powertrain (P/TRN) fuse and wait a minimum of 20 seconds. Re-install fuse and replace fuse box cover.
7. Start the engine and verify normal operation.
8. Attach SC043 Campaign Completion Label on inner fender above the underhood fuse box.
AFFECTED PRODUCTION RANGE:
2005MY Sorento LX vehicles produced between 5/21/04 - 1/3/05.
