(PTG) Pinch Strip Replacement (SC066) NOTE:
REVIEW PITSTOP POSTED 9-21-2006 FIRST

Description

This service campaign provides information relating to the reattachment of the rear tailgate pinch strip sensor to the carrier assembly. Some 2006 Sedona vehicles produced between 6/15/2005 - 6/30/2006, may have been produced with an insufficient amount of adhesive to pinch strip sensor. As a result the pinch strip sensor could separate from and end up out of its proper position in relation to the carrier. Kia is reattaching the pinch strip sensor to the carrier assembly to correct this condition.

Vehicles Affected

2006 Sedona vehicles produced between 6/15/2005-6/30/2006.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE:

1. Open hood and check for SC066 Campaign Completion Label on the left inner fender.

^ If the label exists, campaign has been completed- No further Action is needed

^ If the campaign SC066 label does not exist, continue with the remainder of this procedure

SERVICE PROCEDURES:

2. Depress the Power Main Switch to the OFF" position, located in the overhead console. Manually open the tailgate from the exterior of the vehicle.

3. Install a support hoist under the rear tailgate. Using a flat blade screwdriver, gently pry the retaining clips from both the left and right hand tailgate lifter assemblies. Disconnect the lifter assemblies from the tailgate.

4. Lower the support hoist to a level so that you are able to work with the pinch strip carrier assembly.

5. Using non-permanent ink, place ink mark on the bottom of the pinch sensor and the carrier. This will aid in the reassembly of the pinch strip sensor to the carrier.

6. Remove the five (5) machine screws that attach the carrier to the tailgate. This will allow the following procedure to be done in the vertical position.

7. Beginning at the top of the carrier assembly, detach the pinch sensor from the carrier assembly. Do not detach the pinch sensor from the reference mark, located at the bottom of carrier assembly.

8. Using a shop towel, apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to the towel and remove any residue adhesive from the carrier track assembly only. Proceed to only wipe down the adhesive portion of the pinch strip with isopropyl alcohol. Do not remove any adhesive from the pinch sensor.

9. Pour 0.5 Ounce /10 mL of Primer 94 into a suitable container. Using an application brush apply Primer 94 to the existing adhesive on the pinch sensor and the carrier track. Wait 30 seconds before proceeding to the next step.

CAUTION
(Primer 94) Extremely Flammable Liquid and vapor may cause flash fire. May cause eye and skin irritation. Vapor overexposure may cause respiratory tract irritation and central nervous system depression.

*NOTICE
Discard primer if exposed to air more than three hours.

10. Starting at the top of the carrier track assembly, attach a (29.5 inch / 75 cm) piece of the double adhesive to the inside outboard edge of the carrier track. Using the outboard edge of the track as a guide, apply the tape to the entire carrier assembly.

11. Remove the red adhesive guard from the tape. Align the reference ink mark on the pinch strip with the carrier assembly at the bottom of the carrier. Begin to apply the pinch strip on top of the carrier. Begin to apply the pinch strip on top of the double-sided tape and then guide along the outboard edge of the carrier assembly. Apply pressure evenly to the surface of the pinch sensor. Clean any excessive primer on the exterior surface with a shop towel and isopropyl alcohol.

12. Located on the top rear of the carrier is a small amount of double-sided tape. Remove any residue from the rear of the carrier and body, using isopropyl alcohol. Attach a new one-inch (1) strip of double-sided tape to the top rear of the carrier assembly. Remove the red adhesive barrier and install the carrier assembly to the tailgate. Install the five machine screws (5).

13. Confirm the procedure has been completed on both the left and right hand side carriers. Lift the hoist to align the tailgate lifter assemblies. Install both the right and left tailgate lifter to the tailgate and retaining locking clips.

14. Remove hoist from the rear of the vehicle and turn the Power Main Switch to the "On," position. Confirm proper operation of the rear lift gate assembly.
