A/C - Knocking Noise At Idle With A/C ON

Model: Sedona [VQ]

Group: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning(71)

Number: KT2007052301

Subject: A/C Compressor Noise Concern (Climate Control - 010 - REVISED)

Date: Wednesday, September 03, 2008

Area: N. America

Description:

This revised bulletin replaces information published on 5/23/2007, Climate Control 010. It readdresses some 2006 2008 Sedona (VQ) that may exhibit a knocking noise (mainly at idle) during A/C operation. A new redesigned A/C compressor Disc & Hub with better dampening characteristics can be retrofitted to these vehicles A/C compressors to eliminate the concern. This new design Disc & Hub assembly can be applied to any 2006 2008 Sedona (VQ) manufactured before January 16, 2008 that exhibits this concern and hasn't had the current new redesigned Disc & Hub installed.

Please note that there are two (2) redesigned Disc & Hub assemblies, the first of which is no longer supplied. In some cases KMA has found that the first redesign did not effectively address all customer concerns. The current redesigned Disc & Hub should be used in these cases, even if the first redesigned Disc & Hub had been tried.

As of 7/17/2008, only the current redesigned Disc & Hub is being shipped from all Parts Distribution Centers. The part number has not changed between the first and current redesigned Disc & Hub. To order the current redesign Disc & Hub, use PN 97644 4D900FFF.

Effective Vehicle Information

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Sedona (VQ) vehicles with a production date prior to January 16th, 2008

Parts Information

REQUIRED PART:

Disc + Hub Assembly Part number 97644 4D900FFF

REQUIRED SST:

SST number 09977-29000

Service Procedure

Disc + Hub Removal:

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift and remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.

2. Remove the lower engine shield from the wheel well area to expose the A/C compressor / drive belt area, as shown in the photo.

3. Use SST number 09977-29000 to hold the disc + hub assembly.

4. Using hand tools, carefully remove the A/C compressor's original disc + hub assembly.

WARNING:
Do NOT use power tools when removing or installing the disc + hub assembly bolt! Bolt is easily broken off if not properly removed and reinstalled!

5. Remove the disc + hub assembly by sliding it off the compressor shaft. No special tool or puller is required.

WARNING:
An adjustment washer that is responsible for disc + hub to drive pulley clearance may stick to the end of the compressors shaft, stay inside the original hub assembly, or fall to the floor!

Take special care not to lose this washer!

Disc + Hub Reinstallation:

1. Transfer the original disc + hub clearance adjustment washer to the new redesigned disc + hub assembly.

WARNING:
Failure to transfer this adjustment washer from the original disc + hub assembly to the new assembly will cause the newly installed disc + hub assembly (and original pulley assembly) to fail!

2. Reinstall the new redesigned disc + hub assembly. lightly tighten the assembly bolt using hand tools and SST 09977- 29000. Finish tightening using a torque wrench set to 7.2 ~ 10.8 lb-ft (86.4 to 129.6 lb-in.)

WARNING:
Do NOT use power tools when installing the disc + hub assembly bolt! Bolt is easily broken off if not properly tightened to specification.

Process Verification:

1. Start the engine with the A/C off. Check that the newly installed redesigned disc + hub assembly does not rub or drag on the compressor pulley. The disc + hub should NOT turn with A/C off! If disc + hub turns with A/C off, recheck your work.

2. Turn ON the A/C and check that the disc + hub assembly engages the compressor pulley without slipping. If slipping occurs, recheck your work.

3. Verify that the original concern of knocking noise is eliminated.

4. Reinstall the engine shield and wheel assembly. Torque wheel nuts to 65.1 ~ 79.5 lb-ft.
