SERVICE ACTION: TCM UPGRADE: Shift Delay and Shift Quality Enhancements (SA 016) (Trans - 027)
- Description
This bulletin provides information related to the TCM software upgrade of some 2009 BORREGO (HM) with 3.8L engines produced from Job #1 to January 15, 2009. This upgraded logic will reduce customer complaints related to shift quality. When the reflash is complete the TCM adaptives and Sub-ROM must be reset.
To correct this condition, the TCM should be reprogrammed using the GDS download as described in this bulletin.
*NOTICE
To verify the vehicle is affected, be sure to check the version of the vehicle's TCM ROM ID before attempting to upgrade the TCM software. Refer to the ROM ID Information Table.

- Service Procedure
1. Connect the power supply cable to the GDS tool.

2. Connect the USB cable between the Vehicle Communications Interface (VCI) and the GDS tool.

3. Connect the Main 16-pin DLC cable (GHDM - 241000) to the VCI.
4. Connect the Main 16-pin DLC cable (GHDM - 241000) to the OBD-II connector, located under the driver's side of the instrument panel.
5. With the ignition key ON, turn ON the VCI and GDS tool. Access the GDS vehicle identification number (VIN) screen and configure the vehicle using manual VIN entry.
*NOTICE
6. At the GDS Main Screen, select ECU UPGRADE from the menu buttons located on the bottom of the screen. Next, select Auto Mode, AT.
7. Perform the TCM upgrade in accordance with normal GDS tool ECU upgrade procedures.

* MANUAL MODE TCM UPGRADE PASSWORDS
* Do NOT perform Manual Mode TCM upgrade unless Auto Mode fails.
8. Follow the procedures displayed on the GDS screen to complete the ECU Upgrade process. Return to the main screen when complete.
9. Check for (and clear) any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in the Engine, Trans, and ABS/ESC ECUs.
10. Perform the TCU SUB ROM RESET and adaptive value reset procedure in accordance with Trans/Drive TSB 017, steps 26-30.
11. Select TCU Sub-ROM Reset and follow the on-screen instructions.
12. Follow instructions at right.
- Ignition key ON
- Engine Stop
- shift lever in R position.
- Accelerator pedal depressed 50%
Click the "OK" button.
13. TCM sub ROM reset is complete as shown. Turn the ignition key off and on after moving the shift lever to the "P" position.
14. Confirm proper shift points of A/T units after reprogramming to reduce customer complaints of excessive shift shock and improper shift points.
15. The customer may notice some different shifting characteristics for the first couple hundred of miles until all adaptives are set according to the driver inputs.
