- Description
This bulletin provides information relating to the rear tailgate actuator assembly gear and cover replacement. Some 2009MY Borrego vehicles produced between 05/09/2008-07/24/2008 may have an intermittent or non-functional rear tailgate actuator assembly. To correct this condition the rear tailgate actuator assembly gear and exterior cover have been redesigned.

A Service Action is a repair program without customer notification that is performed during the warranty period. Any dealer request to perform this repair outside the warranty period will require DPSM approval.

- Service Procedure
1. Open the rear tailgate from the exterior. If the tailgate latch will not open from the exterior, remove the access cover from the interior tailgate trim and manually open the tailgate.
2. Using a body trim tool, remove the upper trim. Next remove the two (2) upper trim screws for the lower trim.
3. Remove the tailgate door handle and two (2) mounting bolts. Using a small flat blade screw driver, remove the trim tab and single (1) mounting screw.
4. Remove the two (2) plastic trim screws from the rear latch and remove the lower trim cover from the vehicle.
5. Disconnect the two (2) tailgate actuator assembly electrical connectors. Remove the three (3) tailgate latch bolts.
6. Remove the four (4) mounting nuts to the rear tailgate control module. Remove the tailgate actuator assembly from the vehicle.
7. Remove the two (2) tailgate latch cover mounting screws. Release the seven (7) tailgate retaining cover latches and slightly pry the top alignment tabs to remove the exterior cover. Discard the original cover.
!CAUTION
Use care not to damage or break the tailgate retaining cover latches that are integral to the rear latch.
8. Remove the center pin from the cam gear, discard the original cam (5.0mm gear height) gear.
9. Place the center pin in the newly supplied cam (6.5 mm gear height) gear and orient the gear as noted in the photo. This will be the reference position for installation.
10. In the reference position mesh the electric motor drive gear with the new driven cam gear. Slightly lift up and rotate the cam gear clockwise in mesh and insert the centering pin into lower housing bore.
11. With the cam correctly installed the new gear and centering pin will have no free play between the top of the gear and centering pin.
12. Install the new exterior cover to the latch and secure the seven (7) tailgate retaining cover latches to the base of the latch. Slightly pry the three (3) top alignment tabs into position. Reinstall the two (2) cover screws. Install the tailgate assembly to the vehicle and install the two (2) electrical connectors.
13. Install the four (4) mounting nuts to the rear tailgate control module and the three (3) bolts to the rear latch. Torque (5.06-7.95 lb-ft / 6.86-10.78 Nm ). Close rear tailgate and verify proper latching and auto latching feature.
14. Install lower trim and door handle bolts. Install the lower trim machine screw and upper trim two (2) machine screws. Install the upper trim to the tailgate.
