SMART KEY OPERATION OVERVIEW
This bulletin provides information relating to the functionality of the Smart Key* as found on some 2011MY Sorento (XM) Sportage (SL) Optima (TF) Forte/Forte Koup (TD) Soup (AM) and 2009MY Borrego (HM) vehicles. This information may be used to educate the customer on the correct usage of the Smart Key* and eliminate any confusion on button functionality and system operation
The Smart Key* is designed to allow a door or tailgate* to be unlocked or locked without inserting a key After locking the tailgate the Smart Key* must be out of operational range to confirm that it is locked otherwise the tailgate door will remain unlocked.
Tech Tip:
When testing the rear hatch latch operation keep the smart key at least 5 feet away from the vehicle during diagnosing or the hatch will not lock.
The Smart Key* must be within 28 ~ 40 in (0.7 ~ 1 m) from the outside door handle for the keyless unlocking/locking feature to operate properly (doors will not lock if the Smart Key* is left inside the vehicle)
Driver's door can be locked / unlocked when button is pressed (arrow), and Smart Key* is within proper operational range (see complete details below)
Smart Key* Operation Overview:
Lock Button:
All doors (and tailgate*) are locked if the lock button is pressed. If all doors (and tailgate*) are closed the hazard warning lights will blink and chime sounds once to indicate that all doors (and tailgate*) are locked. However if any door (or tailgate*) remains open, the hazard warning lights will not operate. If all doors (and tailgate*) are closed after the lock button is pressed, the hazard warning lights will blink once
Unlock Button:
The driver's door is unlocked if the unlock button is pressed once. The hazard warning lights will blink and chime sounds twice to indicate that the driver's door is unlocked. All doors (and tailgate*) are unlocked if the unlock button is pressed once more within 4 seconds. The hazard warning lights will blink and chime sounds twice again to indicate that all doors (and tailgate*) are unlocked. After pressing the button, the doors (and tailgate*) will be locked automatically unless you open any door within 30 seconds.
Two-stage unlocking may be disabled or enabled by simultaneously pressing the Lock and Unlock button for 4 seconds (disabling 2 stage unlock allows all vehicle doors to unlock simultaneously). The hazard warning lights will blink 4 times to indicate that 2 stage unlock was enabled.
Tailgate/Trunk Unlock Button* (Use when more than 2 feet away from rear hatch): The tailgate is unlocked if the button is pressed and held for more than 1 second. The hazard warning lights will blink twice to indicate that the tailgate is unlocked. However, after pressing this button, the tailgate will lock automatically unless you open the tailgate within 30 seconds. Also, once the tailgate is opened and then closed, the tailgate will lock automatically when the smart key is at least 2 feet away from the rear of vehicle (Smart Key* Function).
Auto Rear Tailgate Unlocking* (Smart Key Function): If you are within 28 40 in. (0.7 1 m) of the outside tailgate handle, with your smart Key* in possession, the tailgate will unlock when you press the tailgate handle. The hazard warning lights will blink twice to indicate that the tailgate is unlocked. Also, once the tailgate is opened and then closed, the tailgate will lock automatically when the Smart Key* is at least 2 feet away from the rear of vehicle.
Panic Alarm Button:
The horn sounds and the hazard warning lights blink for about 30 seconds if this button is pressed for more than 0.5 seconds. To stop the horn and lights, press any button on the transmitter.
Starting and Shutting the engine OFF:
The Smart Key* is also the primary means to allow the engine to be started without inserting the key. The Smart Key* must be located inside the drivers compartment for this feature to operate properly.

Vehicle will sound a warning siren if vehicle is running in Park and Driver exits the vehicle with PIC fob in pocket. This is to inform the driver that he/she is exiting the vehicle with vehicle still running.
