SUBJECT: SERVICE ACTION: PCM UPGRADE - MIL ON WITH DTC P200A DTC LOGIC IMPROVEMENT (SA082)
This bulletin provides the procedure to upgrade the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) of some 201112MY Sorento (XM) vehicles equipped with 2.4L engine produced from October 1, 2010 to June 3, 2011. Some vehicles may experience a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated with system related DTC P200A stored in the PCM. To ensure maximum customer satisfaction Kia is requesting the completion of this Service Action on all affected 201112MY vehicles. For confirmation that the latest reflash has been performed on a vehicle you are working on verify ROM ID using the tables in this TSB.

To correct this condition the PCM should be reprogrammed using the GDS download as described in this bulletin.

*NOTICE
^ A fully charged battery is necessary before ECM upgrade can take place. It is recommended that the Midtronics GR8-1299 system be used in ECM mode during charging. DO NOT connect any other battery chargher to the vehicle during ECM upgrade.
^ All ECM upgrades must be done with the ignition key in the "ON" position with the blower motor in the "OFF" position during ECM upgrade.
^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or GDS during the PCM upgrade procedure.
^ DO NOT start the engine during ECM upgrade.
^ DO NOT turn the ignition key "OFF" or interrupt the power supply during ECM upgrade.
^ When the ECM upgrade is completed, turn the ignition "OFF" and wait at least 10 seconds before starting the engine, according to instructions displayed on the GDS tool.
^ Only use approved ECM upgrade software designed for the correct model, year.
*NOTICE
To determine whether the vehicle is equipped with an immobilizer (+IMMO) turn the ignition ON and look for security tell-tale in the IP Cluster. Failure to follow the procedure may cause the PCM to become inoperative after upgrade and may be subject to chargeback.
ROM ID Information Table
1. Connect the power supply cable to the GDS tool or to the diagnostic terminal with the GDS docked.
*NOTICE
If attempting to perform the ECM upgrade with the power supply cable disconnected from the GDS tool, be sure to check that the GDS tool is fully charged before ECM upgrade. If the GDS tool is not fully charged, failure to perform the ECM upgrade may occur. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the power supply be connected to the GDS tool.
2. Connect the USB cable between the VCI and the GDS tool.
*NOTICE
When performing the PCM upgrade using the GDS tool, wireless communication between the VCI and GDS tool is not available. Therefore, be sure to connect the USB cable between the VCI and the GDS tool.
3. Connect the Main 16-pin DLC cable (GHDM - 241000) to the VCI.
4. Connect the Main 16-pin DLC cable (GHDM - 241000) between the VCI and the OBD-II connector, located under the driver's side of the instrument panel.
5. With the ignition key ON (DO NOT start the engine!), turn ON the VCI and GDS tool. Access the GDS vehicle identification number (VIN) screen and configure the vehicle using the VIN AUTO DETECT Function.
6. Once back at the GDS Main Screen, select ECU Upgrade from the bottom right-hand corner. Next select Auto Mode, and then Engine. Perform the PCM upgrade in accordance with normal GDS tool PCM upgrade procedures.
*NOTICE
7. The GDS will read the vehicles ROM ID.
8. After the Current ROM ID is displayed, select appropriate Upgrade Event, "162. XM 2.4 P200A DTC LOGIC IMPROVEMENT".
9. After clicking the Upgrade button, read the on-screen Information then click OK.
10. The vehicle battery voltage is checked to make sure at least 12 volts is present to assure reliable upgrade results. Click OK if the results indicate Voltage is OK. If voltage is below 12 volts. It is recommended that the Midtronics GR8 1299 system be used in ECM mode during charging.
11. Upgrade will begin and the progress of the upgrade will appear on the bar graph.
12. The upgrade will occur until 100% is reached on the bar graph. Turn the ignition key OFF for 10 seconds, place it back in the ON position and then click OK to continue according to information displayed on the screen.
13. Click OK on the final screen, which indicates upgrade is complete.
14. TPS adaptation phase should be conducted; cycle IG key ON and turn off wait 15 seconds for main relay to power down, turn ignition ON for 3 seconds for PCM to record throttle angle.
15. Check if any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) have been created by the upgrade and clear the DTC's from memory in all related systems.
16 Start the engine to confirm proper operation of the vehicle.
*NOTICE
Do NOT attempt to perform a Manual Mode upgrade unless Auto Mode fails. Always follow the instructions given on the GDS tool in either Auto or Manual mode. If automatic upgrade fails, turn the ignition key OFF for 10 seconds and then cycle key back to the ON position. See table for Manual Mode.
Manual Mode Reprogramming:
* MANUAL MODE PCM UPGRADE PASSWORDS
(Contact Tech-line before attempting manual mode reflash to ensure automatic reflash procedure was performed correctly)
1. Within the ECU Upgrade screen, select Manual Mode in the left column, then select the appropriate Upgrade Event #162. Select the appropriate control unit part number with reference to the ROM ID Information Table and click OK.
*NOTICE
2. Enter the appropriate password from the below table and then click OK.
3. The vehicle battery voltage is checked to make sure at least 12 volts is present to assure reliable upgrade results. Click OK if the results indicate Voltage is OK. If voltage is below 12 volts. It is recommended that the Midtronics GR8 1299 system be used in ECM mode during charging.

If the vehicle returns after the reflash is completed, please follow appropriate diagnostic flow chart as required. Inspect intake runner, electrical connections and VCMN cam gear.
