Interior - Console Squeaks In Cold Weather
NUMBER 081GROUP Body
DATE August 2011
MODEL 2011 Sorento (XM)
This bulletin provides information related to some 2011 Sorento (XM) vehicles built prior to May 2, 2011 with auto transaxle. There may be a squeak ticking or snap type noise when driving over rough surfaces or while turning the vehicle in the center console area during colder climates, typically the noise will disappear after the interior of the vehicle is warmed up. To repair this condition, perform the following procedure using only the recommended products listed in this TSB. Failure to follow the directions as outlined may not repair the vehicle, do not replace the trim piece unless DPSM has authorized the claim.
1. Apply parking brake before starting R&R procedure.
2. When the vehicle is in Park grab the shift handle firmly and pull upward to remove from shifter shaft.
3. After shift handle is removed place the vehicle in Neutral position as shown.
4. Lift at the rear of the trim panel with both hands at the same time to disengage retaining clips at designated corner areas. Lift up approximately 3 inches and locate the wire connector before proceeding to the next step.
5. After lifting the trim piece about 3 inches, disconnect the electrical connector for the shifter position lighting. Remove the trim piece from the vehicle.
6. Remove the six screws so that the center console upper and lower piece can be separated.
7. Using a small screwdriver or plastic magic stick separate the two upper halves as shown.
8. When the halves are separated, apply 3 4-inch strips of 3M(R) Temflex(TM) friction tape (P/N: 1755) to rear center console upper as shown.
a) Install the six (6) removed retaining screws.
*NOTICE
Do not overtighten or the plastic threads may become stripped.
9. Wrap the two upper guide pins with two (2) inch strips of 3M(R) Temflex(TM) friction tape (P/N 1755) as shown in photo.
10. Flip the trim assembly over and spray the Anti-Squeak lubricant in the designated areas as outlined in photo.
a) Spray all plastics welds on cup holder fasteners and under screw heads as shown.
b) Clean off excess lubricant using Soft clean shop towel according to Manufacturer's instructions.
11. Spray the seam where the upper and lower halves mate together, clean off excess lubricant as required. Majority of lubricant will evaporate and leave a protective coating to protect against squeaks.
12. Spray lubricant between shifter bezel and upper trim panel, clean off excess as required.
a) Using your hands, slightly twist the upper console assembly. If any squeaking is heard repeat steps 9-11 again.
b) If no squeaking is heard, the upper console trim panel is now ready to be installed.
13. Install upper guide pins into dash board.
a) Slowly lower the trim piece while aligning shifter rod into upper console trim.
b) Connect the electrical connector for the shifter lighting.
c) Continue to lower the trim piece until the rear retainers can be locked into place.
d) Install the shifter knob as removed, with a slight downward pressure the knob will lock into place.
e) Repair is complete.
