SUBJECT: TROUBLESHOOTING DTC B1447/B1448/B1764/B1767 (AIRBAG WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED) ON VEHICLES WITH ELECTRIC FIELD OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SENSOR
This bulletin provides information relating to the occupant detection and classification system on certain Sorento (XM), Optima (MG) and Rio (JB) vehicles as shown below:
The purpose of this TSB is to ensure a proper response to the appearance of certain DTC codes that identify a certain temporary condition. On these vehicles the occupant detection and classification system uses an electric field sensor instead of a pressure sensor. The customer is advised in the Owner's Manual not to place any electronic device on or near the seat cushion because it can defeat the OCS. The electric field sensor is sensitive to interference from certain electronic devices, and is also sensitive to the seat getting wet.
If certain electronic devices such as cellular phones, laptop computers, inverters, DVD players, radio transmitters, GPS navigation systems, satellite radio systems, video games, and MP3 players are put on/around a passenger seat cushion (including in the seatback pocket) or if liquid is spilled on the seat cushion, the airbag warning lamp may illuminate with DTC B1447, B1448, B1764 or B1767.
Before attempting to diagnose or repair the occupant classification system:
1 Verify that the seat cushion is completely dry.
2 Verify that nearby electronic devices are turned off.
3 Clear DTC(s).
4 If DTC(s) do not re-code after this review the above information with the customer. Do not attempt to make a repair.
5 If DTC(s) do re-code after this proceed with diagnosis according to Service Information on KGIS.
