SERVICE ACTION: SPORTAGE (SL) SMART KEY UNIT UPDATE - CHANGE OF BCM & SMK SOFTWARE (SA081)

This bulletin provides information related to the Body Control Module (BCM) / Smart Key Unit (SMK) software upgrade of some 2O11MY Sportage vehicles that may experience a current draw/no start or beeping condition. Affected Sportage vehicles fall within the following production date ranges: (SA081A - BCM only: From Jan 30, 2011 to March 2, 2011), (SA081B - BCM/SMK: From Job #1 to January 29, 2011).

For confirmation that the latest reflash has been done to a vehicle you are working on, verify ROM ID using the tables in this TSB. To ensure maximum customer satisfaction Kia is requesting the completion of this Service Action on all affected 2011 MY Sportage vehicles prior to delivery.

CAUTION
Customer must be notified in advance to bring in both Smart Keys for programming; reflash will invalidate previous programming on both Smart Keys and vehicle will no longer start if the spare (not re-registered) Smart Key is used after software upgrade.

Make sure that upgrade is performed with ignition key in "OFF" position.

If automatic upgrade fails, perform SMK manual upgrade while depressing the brake pedal to prevent "sleep" mode.

Register smart key while depressing the brake pedal to prevent "sleep" mode. The Smart Keys must be re-registered after Smart Key unit update.

*NOTICE
A Service Action is a repair program without customer notification that is performed during the warranty period. Any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the warranty period will require DPMS approval.

Not completed Recall/Service Action reports are available on WebDCS (Consumer Affairs > Not Completed Recall > Recall VIN > Select Report), which includes a list of affected vehicles.

This issue number is SA081.

BCM/SMK Upgrade Procedure:

To correct this condition, the BCM and/or SMK should be reprogrammed using the GDS download as described in this bulletin.
