SUBJECT:
LIFTER BRACKET REPLACEMENT FOR SORENTO POWER TAILGATE SYSTEM

This bulletin provides the procedure to resolve a concern with the operation of the Power Tailgate System (PTGS) on some Sorento vehicles, produced from S.O.P. to February 26th, 2013. The concern occurs when the customer attempts to close the power tailgate from the fully open position. The tailgate may start to close but will stop and beep three times, signaling an error in the PTGS. The procedure outlined in this TSB only applies to the situation described above. Any other concerns relating to the PTGS should be diagnosed and repaired using the service information provided on KGIS.

Service Procedure:

1. Verify the PTGS does not operate correctly when trying to close the tailgate from the fully open position.

2. Remove the tailgate lifter wire harness grommet from the right hand side of the tailgate.

3. Direct the assistant supporting the tailgate to apply a small amount of upward force to the tailgate.

4. Grasp the base of the tailgate lifter and gently twist it back and forth in order to remove it from the ball socket on the bracket.

5. Remove the two retaining bolts securing the right side tailgate lifter retaining bracket.

6. Replace the old bracket with the modified lifter mounting bracket. Make sure to apply upward pressure when tightening the retaining bolts to ensure bracket is as far up as possible.

Tightening Torque:
15.9 ~ 19.5 lb-ft (2.2 ~ 2.7 kgf-m)

7. Re-install the tailgate lifter onto the ball socket on the bracket.

8. Re-install the tailgate lifter wiring harness grommet onto the mounting point.

9. Re-initialize the tailgate following the steps below:

^ Open the tailgate.

^ For maximum customer satisfaction, measure and record the tailgate opening height setting.

^ Press and hold both the inner and outer tailgate buttons for 5 seconds or until the vehicle beeps one time.

^ Manually close the tailgate.

^ Press the outer tailgate button and wait for the tailgate to open fully. While the tailgate opens, the vehicle will beep multiple times and the rear combination lamps will blink twice to confirm a successful re-initialization.

^ Cycle the PTGS a total of 4 times to verify proper operation.

^ Open the tailgate and manually set the height to the value recorded on step 2. Press the inner tailgate button for three seconds in order to program the new opening height.
