VEHICLE EMISSIONS RECALL ACTION - D809 (USA), C809 (CANADA)

A possible defect which relates to vehicle emissions exin in some 1991 model year Range Rover vehicles imported by Land Rover North America, Inc. (formerly Range Rover of North America, Inc.).

DESCRIPTION OF DEFECT

Investigations of returned heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) replaced under warranty have shown that a small batch which were factory installed on certain 1991 model year vehicles have a possible manufacturing defect.

This potential defect, while not detrimental to the operation of the vehicle, could illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) alerting the driver to a MFI system fault. Left unrepaired, this could potentially increase the emissions level of the vehicle.

VEHICLES INVOLVED/CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

A total of 1,450 U.S. and Canadian vehicles built from 12/3/90 to 5/24/91 are involved in this recall action.

A list of vehicles retailed by your dealership is enclosed. Customer notification will begin during the week of April 19, 1993. A sample of the customer notification letter is attached to this bulletin.

California Dealers: A supply of "Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction" forms are enclosed with this bulletin. Please complete one form per vehicle once the recall has been done and give it to the customer. Instruct the customer to retain this form in their files unless they are requested by the DMV to mail it in at time of registration renewal.

ACTION BEING TAKEN

Replace both existing heated oxygen sensors with those supplied in HO2S kit, Part No. PRC7062K.

^ Follow procedures in the Range Rover Workshop Manual, Section 17, Page 7.

^ Use anti-seize compound on the threads (do not allow anti-seize to contact the nose of the sensor).





^ Use special tool LST134 and torque to 15 ft.lbs. (20 N-m).

PARTS SUPPLY

A quantity of Part No. PRC7062K, based on your sales volume, will be shipped directly to your dealer shortly. Additional quantities may be ordered directly by you. Use the enclosed vehicle list as a guide when re-ordering is needed.

This is a special package consisting of two (2) sensors and an underhood service campaign label. PRC7062K should not be used in conjunction with this recall and not for any other reason.

STATUS CHECKING/VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

You may check the disposition of any vehicle using the Land Rover terminal - Warranty Recall/Search Screen.

Complete and install a Service Campaign label/clear acrylic cover on the vertical portion of the radiator support panel near the vehicle emissions label. Each H02S kit includes one label and protective acrylic cover.

The repair to your vehicle under this recall will be done at Land Rover's expense. Please contact your Range Rover dealer at your earliest possible convenience to arrange an appointment to have this work performed on your vehicle.

The repair to your vehicle under this recall will involve the replacement of the heated oxygen sensors. This defect, while not detrimental to the operation of the vehicle, could illuminate the check engine lamp alerting the driver to a multiport fuel injection system fault. Left unrepaired this defect could potentially increase the emissions level of the vehicle.

A card (addressed to Land Rover with postage paid), is enclosed with this notice. If you no longer own your vehicle, or if it cannot be reached for a reason such as if it was exported, please provide full Information on these circumstances on this card and return this card to Land Rover.

In order to ensure your full protection under the emission warranty provisions, it is recommended that you have your Range Rover serviced as soon as possible.

The repair to your vehicle under this recall will be done at Land Rover's expense. Please contact your Range Rover dealer at your earliest possible convenience to arrange an appointment to have this work performed on your vehicle.
