DETAIL

One of the four main Systems that may cause a NO START condition in Discovery models when malfunctioning is the Security to GEMS Interface on 1996 and later vehicles.

Turning the key in the ignition on 1996 and later Discovery models causes the following communications sequence to take place:

^ Turning the ignition on sends a coded signal from the Theft Alarm Unit to the GEMS Unit.

^ When the GEMS unit senses the proper code from the Theft Alarm, it turns on the MIL light.

^ When the Theft Alarm Unit senses the MIL light is lit, it initiates engine fuelling and cranking.

NOTE:
Refer to PRIDE-related bulletins far information covering the other system or component conditions which might cause the NO START symptom. The areas are:

^ Starting and Charging System
^ Shifter Cable out of Adjustment
^ Ignition Key/Lock Malfunction

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint for the symptoms outlined, use the diagnostic information below.

Security System "No Start" Troubleshooting Procedure:

NOTE:
During this troubleshooting test, If the vehicle does not crank, DO NOT RELEASE THE KEY AND RETRY. Part of the test is to determine what occurs after about 7 seconds with the key held in the start position.

1. Attempt to start the vehicle.

2. If the vehicle does not crank, continue to hold the key in the start position for approximately 10 seconds.

3. If the vehicle does not crank at all, the problem is with the Starting System. Refer to the Workshop manual and ETM for diagnosis.

4. If the vehicle cranks immediately but will not start, inspect the following connectors:

^ C1029 and C1030 on the Multi-Function Relay Unit for proper connection

^ C1017, C1032 and C1033 at the GEMS unit for proper latching

5. If after approximately 7 seconds the vehicle cranks but still will not start, the problem is related to the Theft Alarm system.

6. Refer to the illustrated schematic and chart to determine where a miscommunication between the Theft Alarm Unit and the GEMS unit may have occurred. A poor connection in any of the circuits shown in the schematics may be the cause.

7. Verify that the following areas are carefully inspected:

^ All connectors are properly latched

^ All terminals inside connectors are properly seated and that no terminals are backed out of the connector

^ Check for deformed female terminals that may cause an intermittent fault
