Plastic Component Refinishing Procedures - Glasurit

SITUATION:
REPAIR REQUIREMENTS FOR PAINTED PLASTIC TRIM
Collision repair and repainting of plastic trim components for 1998 vehicles requires special procedures and the use of paints and additives specially formulated for use on plastic components.

RESOLUTION:
REPAIR AND PAINT DAMAGED OR REPLACEMENT PLASTIC COMPONENTS
Following the special procedures outlined in this TIB, and the technical data sheets in the Glasurit Technical Manual available from BASF, prepare components for paint application and color coat the affected areas. Glasurit/BASF can be contacted directly at 1-800-825 3000

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

CAUTION: Refer to the appropriate technical data sheet in the Glasurit Technical Manual for detailed processing instructions.

NOTE: Wet-on-wet application of paints is also possible. Allow 30 minute flash off before applying top coat.

PREPARATION

1. Clean and degrease the area to be repaired with warm water and soap.

2. Clean any bare plastic areas with cleaner 541-30.

NOTE: Plastic adhesion promoter 934-0 is ready to use as packaged.

3. Spray one coat of plastic adhesion promoter on any bare plastic areas.

4. Allow adhesion promoter to flash off for 15 minutes at 68°F.

CAUTION: Elastifier must be added to primer before hardener.

5. Elastify primer 25% by volume (4:1 ratio).

6. Apply two coats of elastified primer to the damaged area.

7. Allow primer to dry as follows:
^ 285-50 - For 3 hours at 68°F
^ 285-95 - For 4 hours at 68°F
or force dry for 40 minutes at 120°F

8. Wet sand primer after drying time with 400/600 (P800-P1200) grit paper.

9. Wet sand entire area to be painted with 400/600 (P800-P1200) grit paper

PAINTING PROCEDURE

NOTE: Ten percent base coat activator (355-55) should be added to the base coat to ensure maximum stone chip resistance.

1. Mix base coat as follows:
^ 100 parts by volume of base coat 55 Line
^ 40 parts by volume of reducer 352-50,91
^ 10 parts by volume of 355-55

2. Apply two coats of 55 Line" base coat to the entire area allowing three to five minutes between coats.

3. Allow basecoat to flash 10 minutes or until matte.

CAUTION: Elastifier must be added to clear coat before hardener.

4. Elastify clear coat 25% by volume (4:1 ratio)

5. Apply 2 coats of elastified clear coat allowing two to three minutes flash between coats.

CAUTION: Plastic parts can deform during baking if not supported properly. If parts are removed from the vehicle use a lower force dry temperature (120°F for 40 minutes)

6. Force dry at 140°F for 30 minutes.

CAUTION: Allow 24 hours drying time before attempting to polish to remove dirt nibs or similar imperfections.

7. Polish surface as required after 24 hour drying time.
