Engine/Drivetrain - Vibration at 30 to 40 Mph

22/07/94

01/05/94/US

SUBJECT:
Excessive Drive Line vibration 30 to 40 mph (48 to 64 Kph)

MODEL:
All Range Rover
All Discovery

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
Range Rover from LH 639964 to LH 652714
Discovery from LJ 081991 to LJ 099423

DETAIL

A number of reports have been received which detail drive line vibration between 30 to 40 mph (48 to 64 kph) within the VIN's identified above. The vibration is transmitted into the vehicle cabin from the front axle assembly under moderate to light load conditions.

The rubber composition in the right hand engine mounting has been optimized to eliminate vibration.

The harmonic damper now utilizes the same rubber mounting as the right hand engine mounting.

This change was introduced onto production at Discovery LJ 099423 and Range Rover LH 652714.

ACTION REQUIRED

On customer complaint follow the procedure listed below. If this condition is not corrected following the actions identified below please submit a Product Report.

PARTS INFORMATION

Engine mounting (right hand side-starter motor side) ANR 2803 replace with ANR 2804.

Harmonic damper rubber mounting ANR 2803 replace with ANR 2804.

Lock nuts as required NZ112041

PROCEDURE

Reference should be made to the appropriate section of the workshop manual where required.

1) Disconnect the battery negative terminal.

2) Remove the harmonic damper rubber mounting and replace with ANR 2804. Due to a running change in stud size on the new rubber mounting it may be necessary to drill both the harmonic damper weight and mounting support bracket to 12 mm diameter.

3) Replace the right hand engine mounting (starter motor side) with ANR 2804.

NOTE:
It is easier to remove the engine mounting support bracket complete with rubber and refit as an assembly. Care must be taken when raising/supporting the engine to ensure no cables or pipes are put under tension, pay particular attention to the clearance between the fan and radiator cowl.

4) Mark the harmonic damper with a white paint dot to signify modification has been made.
