SITUATION:
POOR TAILGATE LATCHING AND UNLATCHING
There have been a number of complaints regarding upper and lower tailgate latch performance. Most complaints have related to latches that are difficult to operate, which stick, or will not release.
RESOLUTION:
REPLACE LOWER TAILGATE LATCHES AND UPPER TAILGATE LATCH.
New lower tailgate latches are now available which are more resistant to corrosion than previous designs.
The upper tailgate latch has been modified to improve the release of the lower tailgate latches. The upper latch also has a secondary latching mechanism, which improves the integrity of the tailgate latching.
When replacing the tailgate latches, the latches must be correctly installed and undergo a functional check for actuator movement.
NOTE:
The repairs outlined in this TIB are to be performed to resolve customer complaint of the symptoms described.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
LOWER TAILGATE LATCH REPLACEMENT
1. As outlined in WSM, Section 76, replace the lower tailgate latches with the revised design.
2. Lubricate both lower tailgate latches with a dry lubricant.
UPPER TAILGATE LATCH INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT
1. Install the upper tailgate latch as outlined in WSM, section 76.
2. During installation, adjust the latch as close to the actuator as possible without hindering upper tailgate latch-to-striker alignment (Figure 1).
LOWER TAILGATE STRIKER ADJUSTMENT
NOTE:
Some of the modifications to the new latches may cause an increase in the effort required to close the tailgate. The proper adjustment of the striker and latch is critical to the operation of the tailgate latch.
1. Slightly loosen lower tailgate striker mounting bolts to allow movement.
2. Close lower tailgate and allow latches to fully engage.
3. Press latch release and carefully open lower tailgate.
4. Tighten striker mounting bolts completely.
CAUTION:
To ensure proper tailgate alignment, the striker must enter the latch mechanism in the center of the latch opening.
5. Close lower tailgate again to ensure that latches are engaging strikers properly.
NOTE:
To improve unlatching of lower tailgate latches and to improve aperture sealing, the strikers should be positioned as far inboard as possible. This adjustment should not hinder the latch-to-striker alignment (Figure 2). Setting this position will load the lower tailgate against the tailgate aperture seal and cause the latches to release better.
6. Perform complete functional check of both upper and lower tailgates. Ensure proper operation and latch-to-striker alignment.
