HOW TO USE THE RANGE ROVER TESTBOOK SCAN TOOLTurning ON The TestBook
The front panel of the TestBook has the following group of controls and indicators:
Press the ON/OFF button. The green indicator light next to the power plug symbol will light up. This light lets you know that TestBook is turned on and is powered from an external electrical source.
Running From Internal Battery Power
After the internal battery has had time to charge, you can disconnect TestBook from external power for a short period of time (5 to 10 minutes).
- The amber indicator will light up when the TestBook is not connected to any external power source.
- This amber light will flash when the battery power is low. This alerts you to connect to external power soon (maximum of five minutes) or the TestBook will turn OFF.
- TestBook may also be operated from the 12V adaptor connected to the vehicle's battery. This is called the road test power supply.
Adjusting The Display
There are two ways to adjust the display for ease of viewing. The TestBook display panel lifts up as shown. This panel can be set to varying angles for your convenience.
PRESS the latch and raise the display panel.
Contrast adjustment is the other method of adjusting the display for different viewing angles and lighting conditions. To practice contrast adjustment, make sure the TestBook is turned ON. If you just turned it ON, wait until the TestBook displays the RDS Welcome screen.
Adjust the contrast with the knob just to the left of the power light. Rotate the knob in either direction. Never try to force the knob past the stop points.
NOTE: Regular use of the contrast knob is normal for this kind of display.
Using The TestBook Touch Screen
You make selections on the TestBook by touching the screen with your finger. The touch screen senses direct contact with skin. The touch screen will not respond if you touch it with your fingernail or a gloved hand. It will not respond if you use an object such as a pencil to touch the screen.

Using CD ROM Read-Only-Memory Compact Discs
The TestBook reads vehicle repair information from Compact Discs (CDs). These CDs hold information that cannot be changed. TestBook CDs are different from the CDs that play music because TestBook CDs must always be used inside a special case called a caddy.
CAUTION: NEVER put a CD into the TestBook unless it is inside a CD caddy. The CD may get scratched and the TestBook can only read a CD when it is inside a caddy.
TestBook CDs Fall Into Two Categories:
- Software CDs (BLUE):
These contain the computer instructions that operate the TestBook. Periodically, this will be updated and you will need to reinstall the software from a new CD.
- Document CDs (Pictorial):
Technical bulletins, Workshop Manuals and Electrical Troubleshooting Manuals for each vehicle system, will be sent on document CDs.
- Diagnostic CDs (Pictorial):
Vehicle diagnostics and electrical connector pin-outs will be on a separate diagnostics-only CD.
The labeling on top of each RDS CD describes the type of CD it is and tells you the version number of that software or document.
The CD disc drive is covered by a grey rectangular access door. This cover opens from the top. Swing the CD disc drive access door down and you will see an eject button in the lower right labeled with a button that looks like this:
Press this eject button to remove a CD and its caddy from the disc drive.
Handle CDs By Their Edges Only.
Caring for the CDs is simple. Keep them away from heat, dust and dirt..
CAUTION: High temperatures will damage the CDs.
The label of the CD is on its top side. The bottom side has the information that the TestBook reads through the sliding metal shutter of the CD caddy.
NOTE: If the bottom (non-labeled) side gets dirty, the TestBook will not be able to read it. A CD with visible dirt or fingerprints will require careful cleaning before you can use it.
