Testbook Cleaning and Care

TESTBOOK CLEANING AND CARE

Basic Care And Cleaning of the TestBook
The TestBook unit is a sensitive piece of electronic equipment. Always handle TestBook with care. The TestBook is NOT waterproof. Solvents and other liquids should never be stored near the unit.

Avoid exposing the TestBook to direct sunlight, as this will fade the display. The safe operating temperature range is 0° to 50° C (32° to 122° F). Do not store TestBook in a vehicle on a hot day.

The TestBook unit uses components that could produce sparks and must be located 18 inches above the floor.

TestBook must be resting on its four feet when using CDs. The TestBook can not read the CD unless it is flat. Always remove the CD and Caddy from the disc drive before moving the TestBook unit. This is done by pressing the eject button on the CD drive while the Welcome screen is being displayed on the TestBook.

The TestBook must be displaying the Welcome screen in order for the eject button to be active. The eject button will not operate at any other screen, nor will it eject with the TestBook turned off.

It is important to clean the Touch Screen periodically to maintain proper operation. If you wish to wipe the screen while the TestBook is ON, first touch the upper left comer of the screen, next to the screen number. You will then see a message stating: "THE DISPLAY MAY BE WIPED NOW."

The Touch Screen glass and other surfaces can be cleaned as necessary by using a mild, non-abrasive, cleaner. Always apply the cleaner to soft cloth, and then use the cloth to remove the dirt or grease. For particularly tough stains, place a small amount of glass cleaner on a soft cloth and wipe.

CAUTION: Never spray or pour any type of cleaner directly onto any part of the TestBook unit.

CD Cleaning Procedure
The TestBook reads information from the bottom of the CD; the side without printing.

If the bottom side of a CD should become soiled by fingerprints, dirt, or dust, the following cleaning procedure will be necessary:

Never use any type of solvent or cleaner when cleaning a CD!

1. If the CD is in the TestBook, open the access door and press the eject button. (This requires the TestBook to be at the Welcome screen).
2. Remove the CD from its case or caddy and hold it by the edges only.
3. Find a clean, lint free soft cloth. It must be dry!
4. Wipe the CD only in a straight line, moving from the center to the edge.
5. Promptly return the CD to a caddy or protective case.

The CD caddy must also be kept clean.

Periodic Maintenance
There is a cooling fan with an air intake on the rear panel of the TestBook. The fan filter needs to be checked frequently to assure that it is not contaminated with dirt and grease. If the filter is visibly dirty, replace it promptly by using the following procedure:

NOTE: NEVER operate the TestBook without a fan filter!

TestBook Fan Filter Replacement Procedure

1. Obtain a replacement TestBook fan filter.
2. Turn OFF the TestBook and unplug the power supply from the power.
3. Locate the raised cooling port on the back of the TestBook.
4. Use your fingers to compress and remove the filter retaining clip.
5. Remove the old filter.
6. Install a new filter.
7. Replace the retaining clip.
8. Restore external power.

In most cases the old filter may be cleaned and reused. Wash it in warm water and allow it to dry fully before reusing. Do not reuse a filter if it does not wash clean. Never reuse a torn filter.

Internal Battery

Battery Operation
The TestBook's internal battery is designed to power the TestBook only when moving it between a power outlet and a vehicle. It will normally provide between five to ten minutes of power when fully charged. For power within the vehicle, use the special Road Test Power Supply provided. Never attempt a road test using only TestBook's internal battery.

NOTE: The TestBook must be plugged into a power outlet or the Road Test Power Supply for it to turn ON The TestBook, by design, will not turn ON from internal battery power.

The battery recharges whenever the TestBook is plugged into an external power source. Return the unit to the external power supply, immediately after a road test so it can begin recharging for the next road test.

A fully discharged battery needs time to recharge:
- Two to three hours if temperature is more than 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Overnight if cooler than 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Replacement batteries and the battery shipped in new TestBook units are shipped discharged. They need to be fully charged before they will provide power. This simply means leaving them in the TestBook overnight while it is plugged in. The TestBook does not have to be turned ON.

Battery Recharging Procedure (After Extended Use)
Perform this procedure at the end of the work day. It should take less than fifteen minutes. If it takes longer, your battery did not need recharging.

1. Leave the unit ON at the Welcome screen.
2. Without turning the unit OFF, unplug the external power supply. Watch to see that the green light on the front panel switches to the amber light.
3. Wait for the internal battery to discharge completely. The display may go blank after a while, but wait until the amber light on the front panel next to the battery symbol goes out completely (5-15 minutes, depending on battery condition).
4. Plug the TestBook back into a power outlet.
5. Leave the TestBook plugged in overnight. It does not need to be left ON.
6. The battery should last longer the following day. If the battery life is still less than five minutes, then follow the replacement procedure listed.

Battery Replacement Procedure
When the previous procedure fails to restore acceptable battery life, follow these steps to replace the internal battery.

Required Tool: Torx T15 screwdriver.

1. Obtain a new TestBook battery through the Land Rover North America Technical Help Line.
2. Turn OFF the TestBook and unplug the power supply from the power outlet.
3. Locate the battery cover on the front of the TestBook, just to the left of the CD access door, and remove the cover by pulling outward on the bottom side.
4. Unplug the battery wiring from the TestBook at the left-hand side. This is done by gently tugging the wires just above the battery at the far left-hand side.
5. Use a Torx T15 screwdriver to remove the metal clip that holds the battery in place. Remove the old battery.
6. Install the new battery in the same position as the previous battery.
7. Put the metal clip back in place and tighten the T15 screw until snug. Do not over tighten.
8. Plug the wiring from the new battery into the TestBook. The plastic connector is keyed so that it will only go in one way.
9. Tuck the battery wires in above the battery. Use care to make sure that they will not be pinched when the cover is installed.
10. Install the battery cover by placing the top edge in place first, and then snapping the bottom side in.
11. Leave the TestBook plugged in overnight for the battery to charge.

NOTE: Always recycle used batteries according to local regulations.

Fuse Operation
The TestBook is protected by a 1 Amp fuse to prevent the internal circuitry from being damaged. The fuse will not blow under normal operation. However, the following situations may cause the fuse to blow:

1. Making a connection to a power source beyond the limits of the TestBook's voltage range.
2. Connecting the Roving Probes to electrical current while the Test Book is measuring for resistance. (Ohmmeter)

How to Check and Replace the Fuse

1. Turn OFF the TestBook and unplug the power supply from the power point.
2. Locate the fuse on the rear panel of the TestBook. When facing the back panel, it is located on the lower left-hand side, just below the "1.0A" marking.
3. Twist the fuse holder counter clockwise with your fingernail or a small screwdriver, an eighth of a turn, the fuse will come out.
4. Remove the fuse and inspect the filament. When burnt, it will be broken.
5. If the fuse has burnt, replace it with a new fuse rated at 1 Amp. It must be exactly the same physical size. Never use a fuse rated higher than 1.0 Amp, nor a fuse with a larger glass case.
6. Insert the fuse and fuse holder back into the TestBook. Push it in gently while turning clockwise to secure it into place.

NOTE: A set of replacement fuses is shipped with the TestBook.
