Body Harness Corrosion

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
RANGE ROVER (LP) SA302295-VA379275
Safe harness date code - 09 JULY 97

SITUATION:

WIRE CORROSION IN SIDE BODY ELECTRICAL HARNESSES

Range Rovers in the above VIN range may have side body harnesses containing wires that can corrode and cause a variety of electrical faults. On the affected harnesses, the tooling used to handle the wire during manufacture may have been incorrectly calibrated. This could result in the insulation of the wires having small punctures. Because of the damp location of the side body harnesses, moisture could penetrate the insulation and cause corrosion of the conductor. This can result in excess resistance and some cases an open circuit.

RESOLUTION:

REPAIR OR REPLACE AFFECTED WIRES OR HARNESSES

When a damaged wire is found in the side body harness, all the remaining wires in the moisture-prone area (see Figure 1) are to be inspected for signs of corrosion or perforation. Perforated wires will have a knurled appearance. Faulty wires may have visible corrosion or swelling. A heat shrink splice is now available to repair the damaged harnesses. The splice solders and insulates the splice in one step.

If two or fewer wires are damaged, replace the damaged wires with the procedure below. If three or more wires are damaged, the affected harness must be replaced.

NOTE:
The repairs outlined in this TIB are to be performed to resolve customer complaint of the symptoms described.
