DETAIL

During 1995, a small number of engines were built with an incorrectly case hardened crankshaft timing gear, which will result in premature wear of the component. The crankshaft timing gear must be replaced at the 15,000 mile service interval on vehicles within the above VIN range.

Before replacing the timing gear on any vehicle within the above VIN ranges, please check the Vehicle Warranty / Recall Search screen on your Dealer Communications System. If campaign H877 is not shown as an open campaign, do not replace the timing gear.

On completion of the work apply a red paint mark to the engine front lifting eye in order to clearly identify that the work has been completed.

ACTION REQUIRED

Replace the crankshaft timing gear at the 15,000 mile service interval. if the vehicle has over 15,000 miles, check for a campaign sticker. If the campaign sticker is not present, complete the repair at the earliest opportunity.

Note:
Should the timing gear be replaced outside of a scheduled service, the oil filter and oil must also be replaced.

PROCEDURE

Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual noting the following special instructions:

Range Rover 4.0/4.6
Remove fan cowl upper.





Release the drive belt tensioner and remove the drive belt identifying on the belt the direction of rotation.

All Vehicles

Note the position of the timing alignment spot on the crankshaft timing gear in relationship to the camshaft gear. Do not remove the camshaft sprocket from the chain. Ensure when fitting the new crankshaft gear that the timing marks are aligned prior to installation.

Do not rotate engine while the timing chain is removed.

If repair is being carried out during normal service interval, oil and filter should not be claimed.

NOTE:
After completing the campaign, remember to fit the campaign sticker in the allocated space underneath the hood.
