Many after market car phones have a mute function that can automatically mute the radio when there is an incoming call. The mute function is activated by grounding a terminal at the rear of the head unit while this terminal is grounded the radio displays a TEL and the volume is reduced. If the cassette or CD are in use, they will automatically pause. When the ground is removed, the radio resumes normal operation. To access this function there must be a link wire constructed to connect the phone to the radio head unit to request the radio to mute. Follow the suggested procedure below to fabricate a suitable link wire to access the radio mute function.

Upon customer request for activation of the internal radio mute function follow suggested procedure below.

PROCEDURE
1. Review phone owner's manual for functionality of phone. Ensure that the phone has been properly powered from the main harness and has a radio mute function. If it does, check to see if the mute request line from the phone provides a ground signal when mute is requested (i.e. not 12 V).
2. Take a length of wire long enough to range from the phone, along current routing of the wiring harness to the back of the radio unit. Crimp on terminal ALU 1033, route wire and insert into cavity number one of slate, 8 way connector (C226, 4.014.6). Finish by taping link wire to main harness.
3. Read manufacturer's directions for the specifications for the "phone end" of the link harness.
