Reluctor Test Automatic Transmission

1. Place vehicle on hoist and raise to gain access underneath.

2. Remove seven 6 mm screws and two bolts from bell housing access plate. Remove plate complete with gasket.

Keep hands and hair clear of moving parts

3. Start engine and observe reluctor ring. Check, for any lateral or radial runout. A small amount is tolerable. Bent tabs are easily noticeable using this procedure.

4. Stop the engine

5. with a suitable socket and ratchet, rotate the engine until missing tooth is visible, then locate the damaged tooth or teeth as identified by scope pattern wave form.

6. Use the reluctor ring checking tool to gauge whether tooth adjustment is necessary. It should fit snugly in tooth pattern (See figure 4).

7. Repeat this process until all sets of reluctor teeth, which showed abnormal waveform, have been checked.

8. Examine all teeth for evidence of contact with the crankshaft position sensor. If there is damage to the sensor, a new sensor must be installed.

9. Check the condition of the rivets fastening the reluctor to the flex plate. They must be tight and not distorted. Check that the reluctor is flat and flush against the flex plate.
