PROCEDURE

Noise 1:

Steering boot noise:

The rubber boot on the steering column, located at the firewall (bulkhead), which seals the engine compartment from the passengers compartment can make a groaning/bellowing noise when the steering column is rotated. The noise is most audible after an overnight soak in moderate to low ambient temperatures (below 40 F) and when the steering column is turned rapidly through large angles, like during parking maneuvers. The noise may disappear as the vehicle and/or ambient temperatures increase. To correct this condition a bushing has been added starting from the following VIN's. Range Rover Classic - SA662178, Discovery - TA165167, TA502448.

Procedure 1:

1. Park the vehicle with the steering aligned in the straight ahead position. Important.

2. Remove the drivers under dash closure panel.

3. Remove six bolts and two nuts to remove the ramp bracket (arrowed in illustration).

4. Remove air cleaner hose from plenum to air filter and cover openings on plenum and air filter to prevent debris from entering the system.

5. Remove upper intermediate steering shaft bolt (nearest bulkhead) and loosen middle intermediate steering shaft bolt.

6. Index steering shaft to steering column with a marker. Pull steering shaft off end of steering column and place aside.

7. From inside the vehicle remove the steering boot from bulkhead and push down steering column to remove.

8. If the boot was damaged during removal, replace with ANR5053, and go to step 14. If the boot is good continue with step 9.

9. Clean any grease from the boot.

10. Glue bush into boot as per illustration using Loctite 495. Allow glue to cure. See Note

11. Lubricate inside of the bush with Dow Corning bearing grease. Lubricate the outside of the boot with silicon spray to aid reinstallation.

12. Refit the boot over steering column and into bulkhead ensuring boot is correctly seated.

13. From inside the vehicle check the bush is still in place in the boot. If not, remove boot and return to step 8.

14. Refit ramp bracket. Torque all fasteners to 16 lb.ft (22 Nm). Refit closure panel.

15. Refit intermediate steering shaft. Ensure proper alignment of the index marks. Refit and torque steering bolts to 18 lb. ft. (25 Nm).

16. Refit air cleaner hose.

17. Road test to check steering wheel alignment.

* Note:
It may be necessary to split the plastic bush with a hacksaw blade to enable the bush to expand and pass over a weld at the base of the steering shaft.
