Valve Cover Oil Filler Neck Seal Repair
1. Check to see that there is an O-ring installed in the joint between the filler neck and the valve cover.
CAUTION:
If the filler neck cannot be easily removed, do not force. Refer to TIB 12/04/96/US and remove the valve covers.
NOTE:
A removal tool may be fabricated by modifying a 15/16" socket or the equivalent with two parallel grooves in the end of the socket The O.D. of the socket should not exceed 1.250" (figure 1).
2. If there is no O-ring present, remove the filler neck.
3. If the valve cover is removed, loosen the baffle plate on the underside of the valve cover to release the filler neck from the cover assembly.
4. Remove the filler neck in a counter-clockwise direction.
NOTE:
It is important to thoroughly clean the female threads in the cover before reinstalling the filler neck with the new O-ring. Failure to do so may result in cross-threading the oil filler neck upon installation.
5. Clean all thread locking materials, dirt and oil from the filler neck and cover.
6. Inspect the filler neck threads for damage. Replace filler neck if threads are damaged.
7. Install new O-ring on filler neck.
8. Apply two 1/8 inch beads of Loctite(R) adhesive (such as Super Bonder # 498 or Thread Locker # 272) perpendicular to the filler neck male threads, 180 degrees apart.
9. Immediately tighten the filler neck into the valve cover until the O-ring is sufficiently compressed 15-18 Nm. (11-13 lbf.ft.).
10. Install filler cap and tighten.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Do not remove or install oil cap or otherwise disturb the joint until the Loctite(R) has cured fully. This may take up to 24 hours.
11. Tighten oil filler baffle plate if previously loosened.
12. If valve cover has been removed to repair oil filler neck, install the cover and replace the valve cover gasket using the procedure in TIB 12/04/96/US.
WARRANTY:
Normal warranty procedures and policies apply.
