DETAIL

Some 1994-95 Discovery Models are experiencing difficulty in starting because of poor terminal connections at the ignition coil. Replacing the spade type terminals with ring connectors resolves the problem. The following procedure outlines the steps necessary to change the terminals.

The diagnostic steps and repair procedures detailed in this bulletin were developed as an element of the Land Rover Way OPERATION PRIDE. This TIB provides a library location for PRIDE information within the Land Rover North America technical Literature system.

ACTION REQUIRED

Replacement of the spade terminals with ring connectors.

PARTS INFORMATION

YPG 10002 - Ring connector (qty.5)
Locally sourced materials:

^ Heat shrink sleeving 6 mm diameter 100 mm (4 in)
^ Cable ties (as required) Crimping tool - Wurth 558-13

PROCEDURE

1. Make sure the radio code is available. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

CAUTION:
Work on one side of the coil at a time to avoid confusion.

2. Cut the existing wires from the terminals on the coil as close to the terminal as possible.

3. Strip approximately 7 mm (1/4 in.) of insulation from the wires.

4. Slide approximately 20 mm (3/4 in.) of heat shrink sleeving onto each wire.

5. Crimp a tinned ring connector to each wire.

6. Slip the heat shrink sleeving over the crimp area, and shrink down using a heat gun.

7. Unscrew the nuts from the terminal posts using an 8 mm socket. Retain the nuts and washers for installation, and discard the spade type terminals.

8. Connect the ring connector to the studs on the coil using the original nuts and washers. Torque the nuts to 2.2-3.0 Nm (19-27 lbs.in.)

9. Support the engine harness with cable ties to reduce the strain on terminals of the coil.

10. Make sure that none of the terminals can short circuit on the PAS reservoir bracket.
