Rear Axle Tube Seal - Oil Leaks

PRIDE - Rear Axle Tube Seal Replacement

DETAIL

Some 1995 and 1996 Range Rovers can leak axle oil through the rear axle tube seals. A new seal has been developed that fixes the problem.

NOTE:
Upon inspection, if either of the rear axle tube seals is leaking, both seals are to be replaced with the new seals.

The diagnostic steps and repair procedures detailed in this bulletin were developed as an element of the Land Rover Way Operation PRIDE. This TIB provides a library location for PRIDE information within the Land Rover North America technical literature system.

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint for the symptoms outlined, perform the specified repairs.

PROCEDURE





Perform the diagnostic procedures and repairs outlined in this bulletin for the repair of rear axle tube seals.

Removal

1. Remove road wheels.





2. Remove lower guide pin of each caliper (figure 1).

3. Rotate caliper up and remove brake pads.

4. Lower caliper and loosely install lower guide pin.

5. Remove two bolts holding caliper to hub (figure 1) and discard caliper bolts.

6. Remove caliper and tie aside making sure brake hose is not stressed.





7. Remove screw holding disc and remove disc (figure 2).

8. Using wire brush, remove corrosion from disc mating surface before cleaning with a suitable solvent.

9. Remove three bolts and remove disc shield (figure 2).

10. Remove two bolts and remove shield strap (figure 2).





11. Remove ABS sensor from hub and remove sensor seal and bush (figure 3).





12. Remove six bolts and discard, remove hub and half shaft assembly from axle (figure 4).

13. Using suitable tool, remove oil seal from axle housing.

Inspection

1. Inspect seal track on axle for surface damage. Replace with new axle if damaged.

2. Inspect seal locating bore and remove any sharp edges that may damage the new seal.

3. Check axle breather for proper operation.

Installation

1. Clean splines and seal mating surfaces.





2. Lubricate lip of oil seal and install in axle case using tool # LRT-51-006 (figure 5) or tool # LRT-54-012.

3. Install hub and half shaft assembly to axle case, install new bolts. Tighten to 65 Nm. (48 lbf. ft.).

4. Clean ABS sensor, bushing and mating surface.

5. Install a new ABS sensor bush. Replace ABS sensor dust seal if damaged. Install in hub.

6. Install disc shield strap and secure with bolts. Tighten to 8 Nm. (6 lbf. ft.).

7. Install disc shield and secure with bolts. Tighten to 8 Nm. (6 lbf. ft.).

8. Install brake disc, secure with screw. Tighten to 25 Nm. (18 lbf. ft.).

9. Install brake caliper with new bolts. Tighten to 100 Nm. (74 lbf. ft.).

10. Remove lower guide pin and rotate caliper upward.

11. Install brake pads with chamfer towards the leading edge of disc (towards the rear of vehicle).

12. Swivel caliper downwards into position.

13. Install guide pin bolt. Tighten to 35 Nm. (26 lbf. ft.).

14. Apply brake pedal several times to locate pads.

15. Check axle fluid level, top up as necessary.

16. Reinstall road wheels. Tighten to 108 Nm. (80 lbf. ft.).

17. Road test vehicle and check for leaks.
