Suspension - EAS Valve Block Ices Up In Cold Climates

NO. 60/09/94/US

DATE: 29/07/94

MODEL
Range Rover

AFFECTED VEHICLES
All Range Rover with Electronic Air Suspension

SUBJECT
Electronic Air Suspension (EAS)
Valve Block With Separate Driver Box

DETAIL

To improve serviceability the EAS valve block has been modified to allow replacement of its two main components. The valve block and driver box are now both serviced individually as spare parts.

Vehicles BEFORE VIN LH 647328:

When replacing an old style valve block with the latest part which has a detachable driver box, the extra electrical cable should be tie wrapped to the valve block as shown in the illustration. Position the leads from the driver box to the white connector over the top of the valve block to ensure it does not get trapped under the solenoids.

Vehicles AFTER VIN LH 647328:

If the new valve block is diagnosed as being faulty the procedure below should be followed to determine which part of the assembly requires changing

ACTION REQUIRED
Fix on customer complaint.

PARTS INFORMATION

NTC 9811 Valve Block Assembly supercedes to its components.

ANR 3282 Valve block.
ANR 3157 Driver box

PROCEDURE

Near the start of 95 Model Year production, the old style EAS valve block part number NTC 9811 was changed to a two piece design. Service parts available now are ANR 3157 valve driver and ANR 3282 valve block.

When servicing the old style valve block both parts must be replaced. When servicing the new style, there is an opportunity to replace only the failed component.

There will soon be a Technical Information Bulletin to address CONTROL VALVE ICING in severely cold climates. However, when any valve is suspected of malfunctioning, use TEST BOOK or the HHT to perform a valve test.

If a fault is found, proceed as follows:

1. Note which valve is not working during the Initial tests.
2. Remove the air supply unit from the vehicle and remove the valve block and driver assembly from the box.
3. Separate the connectors between the block and driver. Note the dump valve is powered directly by the compressor relay.
4. Following the wires from each valve, measure the resistance of each valve, particularly the valve noted in step one.

Valves one to six = 3.9 Ohms +/- 10% at 20°C
Valve eleven = 38.4 Ohms +/- 10% at 20°C

If any valve is found to be shorted, replace the valve block and driver.
If any valve is to be open, replace the valve block only.

If all valves are within specification, replace the driver only.

Please Note
A system calibration is only necessary when a height sensor or an ECU is replaced.
