Repair Procedure

PROBLEM DETERMINATION

Confirm finisher vibration as the noise source by driving the vehicle at highway speeds. The vibration can be felt on the upper inner surface of the windshield when the noise appears.

NOTE:
1. If a dab of white paint is found on the upper retaining screw of the driver's side exterior "A" post finisher this repair has already been completed.

2. If vehicle is prior to VIN VA352947, steps 1-11 should be carried out.

3. If vehicle is after VIN VA352947, only steps 5-11 should be carried out.

REPAIR

Refer to the Workshop Manual, Section 76 and perform the following steps:

1. Insert a thin plastic tool between the finisher and the roof panel as described in the Workshop Manual.

CAUTION:
Do not force the finisher off of the studs. Any distortion of the studs will reduce the effectiveness of the repair.

2. Carefully disengage the 8 clips by sliding them toward the left side of the vehicle (Figure 1) and remove the existing windshield finisher.

3. Refer to the "check mark symbol" in Figure 2 and verify that the clips are fully engaged as shown.

4. Install the new finisher using the improved clips, DCE 10038L.

5. To form a gap for sealant application, insert a nylon bone under the center of the upper screen finisher lip.

6. Insert the sealant applicator tip into the gap next to the bone, approximately 10 mm (3/8 in.) underneath the finisher.

CAUTION:
Sealant should not come out from underneath the finisher.

7. Slowly slide the applicator from the center towards the outer end of the finisher, applying a consistent bead of sealant underneath the finisher.

8. Insert applicator on the other side of the nylon bone and apply towards the opposite end of the finisher.

9. Remove nylon bone and ensure lip of finisher lays against windshield glass.

NOTE:
Elastomeric bead is to be between the finisher/glass interface to fill the gap between the two components.

10. Allow sealant to skin over (about 5 minutes), and remove any visible sealant from the windshield and finisher.

11. To indicate that the repair has been performed, apply a dab of white paint to the upper retaining screw head of the driver's side exterior "A" post finisher.
