Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Procedure

1. Verify ignition is off and ignition key is removed

NOTE:
The connectors are mounted at the back of the engine on the air cleaner. The 3 way connector is to be replaced. The 2 way connector is correctly built to specification and MUST NOT BE MODIFIED.

1. Disconnect the 3 way MAF sensor connector and the 2 way Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor connector.

2. Carefully peel back 330 mm (14 in.) of convoluted tubing and tape from the wiring harness from behind the connectors. (Figure 1)

3. Separate the IAT sensor wires (red/black and grey/green) from the MAF sensor wires. (Figure 1)

6. Cut the 3 wire harness directly behind the 3 way MAF sensor connector and discard the removed connector. (Figure 1)

CAUTION:
The location of the wire splices must be staggered to ensure that the heat shrink tubing from one wire is not in contact with the tubing placed on adjacent wires. To accomplish this, both the new connector lead and the harness wires must be cut to different lengths.

7. Cut the new connector lead to length as follows

^ Cut blue/green wire at 55 mm (2.25 in.)
^ Cut brown/orange wire at 140 mm (5.5 in.)
^ Cut red/black wire at 215 mm (8.5 in.)

CAUTION:
Ensure that the splice performed on this page is done with care and as instructed. Failure to do so may result in MAF sensor malfunction and possible MIL illumination at some future time.

^ Ensure correct color to color match and corresponding length adjustments are maintained.
^ Ensure the repaired harness length is the same as the original harness length for proper connection of the newly installed MAF sensor connector.
^ Crimp splices MUST BE SOLDERED to ensure proper electrical circuit integrity.

8. Shorten two of the MAF sensor harness wires to match the staggered lengths of the modified new connector leads.

9. Perform the following splice procedure on each wire:

^ Remove 8 mm of insulation from each wire end.
^ Slide a length of heat shrink tubing over cable lead.

^ Lay the two stripped wires into the splice crimp and close the crimp.
^ Solder the joint ensuring that solder flows through the crimp.

10. Repeat the crimping process for the remaining two wires.

11. Slide the heat shrink tubing over the soldered joints and heat the until it shrinks over the repair.

CAUTION:
Ensure that the IAT sensor harness breakout location matches the original.

12. Wrap the repaired area with electrical tape and ease the harness back into the original convoluted tubing.

13. Connect both the 3 way and 2 way connectors

14. Start engine and verify proper response
