Electrical - Intermittent Engine No-Start Condition
No: 86/13/03/NASRef:
Issue: 1
Date: 12/05/03
Battery Cable Torque Specification
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Freelander (LN) All
SITUATION:
INCORRECT WORKSHOP MANUAL TORQUE SPECIFICATION
The customer may complain that the vehicle intermittently fails to crank. An incorrect torque has been published in the RAVE workshop manual section 86.60.01. If the higher torque in 86.60.01 is applied to the starter motor battery lead at the solenoid, the electrical connection may become intermittent and the engine may fail to crank.
RESOLUTION:
VERIFY CORRECT TORQUE AT STARTER MOTOR CONNECTION
If a customer complains of random intermittent non-cranking situations, verify the correct torque has been applied to the starter motor solenoid cable connection.
PARTS INFORMATION:
No parts required

Re-torque battery lead to starter motor solenoid
FAULT CODE: L
DDW WARRANTY CLAIMS:
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.
Material allowance is included in labor operation.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
VERIFY THAT CORRECT TORQUE HAS BEEN APPLIED
CAUTION:
When refitting the battery lead to the starter motor solenoid the nut must be tightened to 10 Nm (7.4 lbf.ft.). Exceeding the torque specification may result in intermittent electrical contact.
NOTE:
The starter motor procedure in the Workshop Manual (86.60.01) will be updated at the next available opportunity to reflect the new torque figure. The information in the Torque Specification section of the WSM is correct at 10 Nm (7.4 lbf.ft.).
1. Remove the engine acoustic cover.
2. Disconnect the battery ground lead.
3. Release the terminal cover from the starter motor solenoid.
4. Loosen the nut securing the battery lead to the starter solenoid. (Figure 1)
5. Tighten the nut securing the battery lead to the solenoid to 10 Nm (7.4 lbf.ft).
6. Install the solenoid terminal cover.
7. Install the battery ground lead and install the engine acoustic cover.
