Diagnostic Connector Ground

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Freelander (LN) 2A353298 to 2A397466

SITUATION:

SELECTED GENERIC SCAN TOOLS DO NOT COMMUNICATE PROPERLY

Because a ground connection is not present at pin 5 in the J1962 diagnostic connector, some generic scan tools do not communicate with the vehicle as intended. This could cause an affected vehicle to fail a state or local inspection maintenance program.

RESOLUTION:

INSTALL ADDITIONAL GROUND CONNECTION

To comply with regulatory requirements, and to ensure proper communication with all generic scan tools, a second ground location will be installed into the diagnostic connector of the vehicle.

REPAIR PROCEDURE





1. Release the protective cover from the diagnostic socket. (A in Figure 1)

2. Depress 2 clips securing the diagnostic socket to the diagnostic socket mounting bracket. (B in Figure 1)

3. Release the diagnostic socket and position aside.





4. Release the secondary lock from the diagnostic socket to allow access to the wiring harness connector, pin number 4. (Arrowed in Figure 2)





5. Using the terminal extractor supplied, release the black wire from pin number 4. (Arrowed in Figure 3)





6. Cut the terminal from the black wire and remove approximately 10 mm (1/2 inch) of insulation from the end to expose the copper wire. (Arrowed in Figure 4)

7. Remove approximately 10 mm of insulation from the single wire on the new harness to expose the copper wire. (Arrowed in Figure 4)

8. Position the heat shrink sleeve over the new harness. (Figure 4)

9. Fit a protective sheet to the interior of the vehicle in the area surrounding the diagnostic socket.





10. Connect the 2 copper wires together and secure using the crimp supplied. (Arrowed in Figure 5)

11. Solder the joint.

12. Position the heat shrink sleeve.





13. Apply a gentle heat to obtain a secure seal. (Arrowed in Figure 6)

14. Remove the interior protective sheet.





15. Insert the 2 connectors into pin location numbers 4 and 5 in the diagnostic socket. (Arrowed in Figure 7)

16. Close the diagnostic socket secondary lock.

17. Check continuity between pin 4 and vehicle ground.

18. Check continuity between pin 5 and vehicle ground.

19. Install cable tie to secure the excess wire to the main harness.

20. Install and secure the diagnostic socket to the diagnostic socket mounting bracket.

21. Install the protective cover to the diagnostic socket.

INSTALL CAMPAIGN LABEL





NOTE:
Campaign labels may have multiple Campaign numbers written on them if multiple campaigns are performed at the same time.

1. When all specified repairs have been accomplished, prepare the campaign label (LRN0002LABEL) as follows:

a) Place the label on a hard surface.

b) Use a ballpoint pen to neatly write/scribe in the bare aluminum areas of the label the following information:

^ Service Action code "D278"

^ Your retailer code

^ The date of repair

2. Clean all grease and dirt from the radiator support member.

3. Peel the completed campaign label from the backing paper and position it on the cleaned area.

4. Roll the label with the special roller tool to ensure proper adhesion.
