Campaign - A/T Speed Sensor Replacement: Overview

No: SB125
Ref:
Issue: 1
Date: 30 April 2004

JATCO Transmission Sensor Updates

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Freelander (LN) 2A353298 to 2A372676

Build Date Up to 03 December 2001

SITUATION:
SENSOR CONTAMINATION CAN LEAD TO "MIL" ILLUMINATION

Speed sensor soldering processes may have burned the enamel protective wire coating leaving the copper cable core exposed. ATF can seep past the connector blades entering the sensor body and coating the wire. The hot ATF chemical attack of the exposed cable causes resistance to increase, followed by sensor failure. Should this occur, the vehicle defaults to limp home/restricted performance mode. A MIL light illumination can occur and fault codes P0715, P0720 or P1715 may be stored.

RESOLUTION:

INSPECT TRANSMISSION SERIAL NUMBER, INSTALL NEW SPEED SENSOR KIT

At the next service opportunity inspect the transmission serial number to determine if a new specification speed sensor with sealant around the soldered joint is required on affected vehicles.
